New decorations every year?

mogs0 · 20/11/2011 21:55

I've read a few comments on christmas threads recently about getting new decorations each year.

Am I the only person that re-uses decorations every year? I don't do it for any reason other than it never occurred to me to change them ever every year Blush.

I do add to the collection each year and our tree is a big mismatch of colour/size/texture - it is properly tacky and uncoordinated (a bit like me Grin).

It's possibly because my mum is still using the same decorations she's been putting up for decades.

I do buy new every year but only two or three to add to the existing ones or replace any broken or past it ones.

I bought a box of red glass decorated baubles from Costco this year ( I manage to break at least 3 glass ones every year) Sad
Some of my pine-y swags had to go last year .
And some of the lights .

I wouldn't have the patience to replace all of them. And there are too many memories in them.

PoppadumPreach · 20/11/2011 22:05

Definitely recycle each year - makes them far more special.

Am always tempted to let my DC choose one new decoration each, each year just cos I get a bit excited!

Beamur · 20/11/2011 22:05

No way. They are old favourites. We usually buy one or two new ones a year, but to throw them away every year and buy new just seems like madness!

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 22:08

Pre children we had pink and silver.

Now we have things made out of loo rolls and cotton wool from pre-school onwards, and Spongebob chocolate novelties with tinsel and red baubles.. It looks a right mish mash but I have got used to it. One year when the boys were little we lost the star for the top so Spud from Bob the Builder went up there. Hmm

fruitstick · 20/11/2011 22:08

I have decorations from when I was little and still have the decorations I bought in my first flat.

I also buy a decoration each year for DSs.

Buying new every year is ridiculous Shock

ColourMeWithChaos · 20/11/2011 22:10

God I've got decorations my DMum had as a child! Reusing makes them so much more special!

However DCs do choose a new one each every year - keeps the excitement without having to get all new

scaevola · 20/11/2011 22:11

No way. I love seeing old favourites year after year, both mine and the ones at my mother's.

We add to them (Santa usually brings one bauble per DC per year that they add to the tree on Christmas morning) but I'd never get rid of the old one's. Then again I don't like overly co-ordinated decorations, so the eclectic grown-over-the-years look suits us very well.

Grumpla · 20/11/2011 22:12

My uncle and my mum usually give me a new decoration each year.

My mum's tree still has all my home-made efforts on it from being a tiddler Smile

I think people who do different "themes" etc are spectacularly missing the point of a Christmas tree!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 20/11/2011 22:13

I buy a new decoration each year that I choose and if I go anywhere abroad/different to the norm then I try to get a decoration from there. I bought one yesterday when I was in London because I liked it.

I have decorations that DH and I bought in NY when the children were little, a gingerbread man and lady with the DC names and DOB on. I also have some hand blown glass ones that we bought in Plymouth when we went years ago. I have some that friends have bought us over the years too. Most of our tree ornaments have sentimental value and the rest are just baubles that we pick up here or there.

I definitely dont replace everything every year. That would be crazy.

purplepidjin · 20/11/2011 22:15

My Aunt and Uncle with more money than sense which is good because they're normally quite sensible only replace every 2-3 years, same as the rest of the decor in their show home house

I've done very well out of it so far Grin

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 20/11/2011 22:15

Reuse, and I add a few each year. Last year I went a bit mad in Disneyland Paris in October on buying Decs and this year I promised DH i wouldn't buy any on holiday, and then bam - an entire shop in Universal studios dedicated to Grinch baubles etc.and I ran off! Blush

All of them are a bit special so I could never get rid. My DS and future lucky DP will have to take all this crap look forward to inheriting them!

startail · 20/11/2011 22:22

Baubles from when we were first married from 3 different trips to the States, from Germany and London and assorted garden centres and B&Q. Far too many memories to throw any away.
DD1 is no better, she brought an absolute beauty back from her German school trip, incredibly carefully wrapped in socksGrin

alysonpeaches · 20/11/2011 22:29

I use the same decorations, occasionally adding a new one. I also use the same tree. I had a cull about 10 years ago, so most of the ones I have are less than 10 years old. The children do like seeing the decorations from when they were younger though. I also enjoy looking at my m ums old tree and seeing the baubles that she had when I was a kid, and remembering putting them up. I used to have a real tree, but started to feel a bit guilty about chopping one down then chucking it out so now we have an artifical one with a few fibre optic twigs in, kept the babies mesmerised when they were little.

I add a few new ones every year - they are all mismatched, but to me they are like a charm bracelet, with different decorations holding their own story and significance. The tree becomes an adventure ( well to me anyway) This year dd will make some, starting a whole new chapter ... Smile. Can't wait to get them out!

girlywhirly · 21/11/2011 08:03

I buy something new, but have never gone for completely new colour schemes every year. This year I have bought material to make a new Christmas tree skirt. Now and again I have a bit of a clear out, one year my friend did very well out of it, otherwise I would have sent the things to the charity shop or fundraising coffee morning. Her kids loved the thngs.

It's a shame that after my parents died, I went through their decs and there were some I remembered from my childhood. Sadly those were so badly scratched and some chipped I had to throw them away. The rest I gave to my aunt and uncle as they didn't have a Christmas tree.

Listzilla · 21/11/2011 11:23

I'm torn this year. All my decorations are clear glass and I love them, but we have a toddler this year and another kiddo due in february so I'm not sure about using the glass ones. I'm tempted to just start over with something more child friendly and let our collection of mismatched memories start now.

Saltire · 21/11/2011 11:28

I ahve a freind who buys new ones each year.
I buy 2 new decorations each year, ahve done for my DSes ever since they were born. DH did comment once "that tree will lookr eally bare when both DSes ahve elft home and taken their decorations with them"Grin.

I also have 4 lovely glass ones that were given to my granny on her first christmas as a married woman by her mother in law(my Gt granny) they are from 1925. I don't put them on the tree in case they get broken

PrettyCandles · 21/11/2011 11:41

We re-use most of our decorations, and everyone enjoys seeing old favourites up again. We also make decorations every year, most are binned in January, but I always label a couple to keep and reuse in subsequent years. Ones the dc have made, that is. I also usually buy a couple of strands of tinsel every year, as it does wear out and begin to look tatty after a few years.

But we don't decorate a tree. We have a marvellously tacky little colour-changing fibre-optic tree. Decorations are for the walls.

DreamsOfSteamingHotMincePies · 21/11/2011 11:46

I use the same ones each year. The garden centre near me which has a large range of good quality decorations puts the at half price straight after christmas so we go each year and buy some good ones cheap which we put up straight away even though christmas day has passed and it gives us something new to look at each year

LissTheSeasonLouBeJolly · 21/11/2011 11:48

we lost all our decorations when we moved house earlier in the yaer, so are starting from scratch and its so stressful. i lost all my nans old decorations and the beautiful baubles I bought last year!

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 21/11/2011 13:09

Saltire you can buy a special stand to hang decs on that you don't want to risk on a tree. I bought one in IKEA for £3 as my disney ones are too heavy and sit on the floor!

boxoftricks · 21/11/2011 13:25

liss- how did you lose them? Sad

LissTheSeasonLouBeJolly · 21/11/2011 13:31

dh was supposed to empty the loft (they were very carefully stored in the corner so they wouldnt get crap stuff thrown on top of them) and he missed them. along with the suitcase containing my wedding dress.

gregssausageroll · 21/11/2011 13:37

I always get a couple new every year. Usually limited edition disney store ones. Our tree is very disney!
