Anybody else working over Christmas?

Well I always feel a bit sorry for myself when everybody else breaks up for Christmas :( I am working Christmas day, boxing day, new years eve and new years day! It's just not right is it?! Oh well somebody has to look after the sick I guess (nurse). To make it feel a bit better we are off to center parcs on jan 2nd for 4 nights to take the edge off feeling sorry for myself! So is anybody else working or is it just me?! :)

oh dear that's rubbish Shock

am a nurse also but we take in turns to do either xmas or new year, never do both in 1 year!

am doing NYE and NYD (nights) this yr

canyou · 15/11/2011 14:07

Poor you, DP is also on the rota for both, days for Christmas and nights for New Year, we are waiting as they usually rework it so that they work one or the other hoping he will have Christmas off as we have DC and it would suit us better but we have to wait and see.

gigglepin · 15/11/2011 14:12

I worked last Christamas day so this year i have got it off.whoop whoop!
Im working a night shift boxing day night, i also have new year off which is unheard of!
Im a nurse too. I dont mind as i knew i would have to work it when i started in the job.

fifitrixibell · 15/11/2011 14:23

In 10 years as a HCP I worked 7 christmases and 2 of the ones I had off were when I was on Mat leave. The atmosphere was usually quite good though and we tried to be festive so it was quite nice but not the same as being off. It was always really busy though, and we had a race with the other local mat units to see who would get the first Christmas baby.

Never had to work both Christmas and New Year though - that seems unfair.

attheendoftheday · 15/11/2011 14:24

Not this year, but will be next year (nurse too). I'm already depressed thiking about it. Sorry for you this year.

Whorulestheroost · 15/11/2011 14:37

Ooh lots of nurses waves well I have two separate contracts with the same trust (both nursing) so I have to do my fair share for both posts. It's the one bugbear I have with being a nurse (apart from the pay of course!) that we have to work over Christmas, I know we have to do but it would be lovely to have a fortnight off :)

Yes its always a nice atmosphere although last year i didnt even get to have a wee, never mind a break and food. It was horrendoulsy busy for the whole 12 hour shift, i literally fell into my car to go home, my feet were KILLING me and i was desperate for a drink.

curlycat · 15/11/2011 20:01

my dh is a paramedic and working 12 til 12 xmas eve and xmas day so at least he'll get to see the kids open their pressies - not quite sure how i'm getting the bmx bike down from the loft on my own yet - maybe santa will nip in to help:)

ENormaSnob · 15/11/2011 20:06

I get my shifts tonight Sad

mumeeee · 15/11/2011 20:18

I'm a support worker to adults with learning disabilities who live in a supported living house. I haven't got my rota yet but will almost certainly be working some of Christmas. Although I won't be working on Christmas Day as all the residents will be with thief families.

canyou · 15/11/2011 20:36

Curlycat My DP also a Paramedic but does not have a shift like that they do 8 to 8 day or night or 24 hrs on, My Dad was also a paramedic and 'Santa' has often arrived in an ambulance Shock to do the attic shift for many a house we know, as the agreement when Dad was working was those with smallies got Christmas off or they worked the night shift but now those days of give and take are gone Sad

lisaro · 15/11/2011 20:47

I will be working lates on Christmas, not health care - it's actually not bad, and my kids are older, and will be at their dad's by then. Ex used to either be away or work Christmas or new year, it's not the end of the world. I remember one Christmas I came in from the kitchen to see they'd put target stickers all over daddy asleep on the sofa, and were all firing at him with action men tanks and launchers, etc. They were ;playing with daddy'.

ASuitableGirl · 15/11/2011 21:05

I am working generally over Christmas marking exam papers. Will be burning the midnight oil and fitting it in where I can :)

smileitssunny · 15/11/2011 21:17

Not this year! The joys of mat leave! (If I'd known what I'd have to do to get Christmas off I might have thought again about my career choices....)

peanutmakinalistncheckinitwice · 16/11/2011 15:08

Ill be working too Christmas day NYE and NYD .....boooo! sure it must be my turn to have it off next year

VajazzleMyFoof · 16/11/2011 16:31

Im working, but the good thing is i work nights 7.30pm until 7.30am so by the time i set out for work my two young boys will be ready for bed.

Ive got Christmas Eve off which was the most important thing, so that i could get the presents ready and get up early and watch them open them rather then be in bed.

Boxing day i will sleep until about lunch time then go to visit family. Im grateful not to work days as the day staff work 7.15am until 7.45pm.

cryhavoc · 16/11/2011 16:46

DH is in Afghanistan and won't be back until March, which I suppose counts as him working over Christmas and New Year.

I'm self employed, but will reduce my workload in December so I can take plenty of time off.

curlycat · 17/11/2011 18:29

canyou crap isn't it - how can he possibly do 24 hours on - that wouldn't be allowed here (we're in scotland) they have tons of different shift times. one of his mates is a ingle guy with no family and he's off xmas day so dp is going to speak extra nice to him:)

canyou · 17/11/2011 18:48

Cryhavoc Sad that puts our moans in perspective as we actually have our DP/DH for the season.
Curlycat we are in IRL and in the county base that is one of the shifts it is good as it means a lot more down time though. Yeah all the older guys [whose DC are adults/older] at DP's base are doing deals with those who want the day off and those on the night shifts have offered to stay on longer so that the those on days get to see the opening present fun. Strangely enough the single child free people are not interested in working for triple time and a favour owed.

headfairy · 17/11/2011 18:50

After 16 years of working pretty much every Christmas day, since having the dcs I've been very lucky and been able to be off for every one. I am working Boxing day and New years Day (dd's birthday is NYE otherwise I'd work that too) so I'm very grateful!
