No I don't think so if it's something you really want. DH is a chef and loves his. I've no idea which one it is though and I can't ask him as he's at work.

No, not crap at all. I asked for a cheese grater a couple of years ago. Have no words of wisdom which potato ricer to get though

I bought DH one as a joke present (among other things) because he loves mash so much, but I tend to monopolise it because it's such fun to use! It is a white plastic one with different metal discs depending on how fine or coarse you want your mash, it bears the name Metaltex.

You can get stainless steel ones, but unless you warm the ricing end before you do the spuds, there's a danger of them getting chilled.

I also warm milk and butter in the microwave before adding to the mash.

Not at all crap, it makes superior mash.

Nope dh loves his! I personally use Delias method (hand held mixer) for the softest mash I've ever had.

I love my potato ricer. It is a white plastic one with different disks. It came from Lakeland. It does creak alarmingly when in use, but is nice and sturdy and doesn't heat up like the metal ones can.

Well if someone bought me a potato ricer for Christmas they would get it shoved somewhere very painful Grin. Surely that's a kitchen aid, and if it would make your life easier you should just buy one anyway.
However, if it will make you happy and it's what you really, really want of course it's ok.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 14/11/2011 19:24

ChooChoo Grin Totally agree - but I'd be asking for this :)
(if DP bought be a kitchen related thing that we actually needed, to make MY life easier? Haha.. his life wouldn't be worth living Grin )

I got Joseph Joseph stacking bowls last year. I didn't need them, but I like them and use them all the time for baking. Of course I could use the boring pyrex bowls I have, and couldn't justify buying them just for normal day-to-day use.

tbh - I can't really think of anything I want for Christmas at all.. hmm

Argh.. I've changed my mind - I'm going to ask for jewellery instead. Potato ricer is crap.

Maybe you could have it as your stocking present and then have something else under the tree?!

I had a potato ricer on my wedding list. Blush Turned out I never used it for potatoes, how on earth do you use it without getting burnt?! Was helpful when weaning DD though!

trixymalixy · 14/11/2011 19:48

I'm getting a sifter and other baking stuff from my Mum. Last year DH's cousin bought us a garlic crusher and a silicon tube for getting the skins off, it was the best Christmas present I got!!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/11/2011 19:56

I've got the Lakeland plastic one, I had said on another thread that I might choose the metal one next time because the plastic one is fiddly to clean and creaks alarmingly. It does go in the DW and I have had it for years and it hasn't broken yet. I hadn't considered the heating/cooling aspect of a metal one though. I really like that you don't need to peel the potatoes, just put them in and squeeze, skin all disappears.

It does take quite a while to do enough potatoes for 4 people though, you definitely need to work into a warm bowl.

It isn't crap to want it as a present either, I always prefer practical to luxury presents and I have gradually over the last 2 or 3 years been replacing my crappy old cheap kitchen utensils with decent and sturdy stuff, I enjoy using them all so much more.

Cabt you have both jewellery and ricer? Sounds balanced to me.
