Moon Sand or Play-Doh for 4YO DD?

I was thinking of buying one of those pizza making sets, or baking sets for DD who's 4, just not sure whether to go for Moon Sand or Play-Doh, never had any. What does everyone think?

Moon sand is vile (imo) smells really chemically. There are some really good play doh kits out there, plus it's easy to make your own play dough once they've used it up.

dreamworldfullofUNICORNS · 13/11/2011 16:42

Play-doh. All the way. Moon Sand is the work of the devil. And you can at least just throw together a batch of homemade playdough in ten minutes everytime it get left with the lid off and dries up!

dreamworldfullofUNICORNS · 13/11/2011 16:43

x-posts! Yes, Vile is a good descriptive word for moon sand...

planetpotty · 13/11/2011 16:57

I have both and IMHO

Playdough = Smile as free

Moonsand = Smile as hoovers up and does not get ground into carpet.

DC love both.

ChinaInYourHands · 13/11/2011 19:17

Thank you for your answers. I think I'll go with Play-Doh. Are any of the kits particularly nice/crappy?

Playdoh - moonsand is the work of the devil.

thousandDenier · 13/11/2011 19:18

Do they still do the barbershop one? that was creepy brilliant

Choufleur · 13/11/2011 19:18

Top tip - if pplaydoh dries out stick it in a pot with a baby wipe.

verybusyspider · 13/11/2011 19:22

I echo what everyone else said about moon sand being the work of the devil, play dough every time (although do consider plasticine, I was quite supprised how good it was...)
we have an octopus playdough set - boys love that one, they can mould fish and then ping them at each other Hmm I loved the dentist one as a kid, don't know if you can still get that, failing that a food one - apart from the fish game they spend ages with playdough making me a 'meal' and presenting it too me

ChinaInYourHands · 13/11/2011 20:02

Does anybody know what the Play-Doh Pizza shop is like? Any good?

dreamworld got there before me, I saw "moonsand" and thought, "work of the devil Grin. (Along with silly putty, which DD left on my soft furnishings and the stain is still there several years later Angry.)

DamnDeDoubtance · 13/11/2011 20:17

MOONSAND!!! HA ha ha ha ha.........

CMOTdibbler · 13/11/2011 20:27

Moonsand - worst thing I have ever, ever, bought

ChinaInYourHands · 13/11/2011 21:18

I promise I shall not buy Moon Sand, ever! So now, what's the Play-Doh Pizzeria like?

sunnyday123 · 13/11/2011 22:19

not opened play doh pizza but got it for £3 in sainsbury sale last wk!

peeriebear · 13/11/2011 22:22

To be honest i'd go with plasticine, it lasted way longer than the play doh and was only spoilt by my older DD using it to put posters up and sticking 'clothes' all over her dolls!

TheElvesSawBatgirlKissingSanta · 14/11/2011 12:03

DONT buy moondough either!!!!
Playdoh all the way!!! :)

HappyAsEyeAm · 14/11/2011 13:06

I've heard bad things about the play-doh sets. Along the lines of them being hard to operate (need too much pushing/pressing) and being poor value. A shame, as I was thinking of getting one for DS and now I don't think I will bother. They're everywhere though at the moment - Argos looks cheaper than most.

While you are at it, buy her a set of drums and a packet of permanent markers... Grin

IJustWannaBeMe · 14/11/2011 13:26

We like moondough - hoovers/sweeps up, and the moulds actually produce the thing they're meant to. One set has survived a year, and still comes out regularly.

Playdough is good too, but keep away from carpets/bedding/curtains, and you have to make sure it's put away or it dries out. Moulds etc, pretty much a waste of time, best used with cutters.
