Star Wars figures - we are very confused - can anyone help?

We are thinking of starting getting ds a few Star Wars figures for Christmas.

We went to look at them in Toys r us today and were a bit overwhelmed and confused by the options available. There seem to be loads of different ranges of the same thing.

Ds likes smallish figures. He has played with one friend's B2D2 and it had little flaps which opened and little guns etc could be pulled out which he loved.

I think we would want to start with the original figures of R2D2, CP3O, Darth Vader, Yoda, Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo etc.

Can anyone recommend a series or range please as we don't know where to start?

How old is your DS? Mine are all obsessed with Star Wars Lego. They are 7, 5 and 2 1/2.

another vote for star wars lego at any age between 4 and 12. My DSs are 4 and 6 and also love the star wars galactic heroes range which is really hard to get hold of for some strange reason but is sturdy and well made. You can get it in toysrus and you can also get the additional characters in sainsburys or on ebay. ELC have also just brought out a very very similar range from playskool which is also chunky and sturdy.

The reissued vintage ones are good and will bring back childhood memories if your Dp had them as a kid - my DS's are star wars mad and will be getting a few this Xmas (as well as a light saber each, Star Wars pj's, star wars lego ........) Grin

And yes I would go for the key characters - or any particular favourites that your DS has.

HTH

Sorry, my ds has just turned 7.

We looked at the galactic heroes range today virgil and they looked great. We were very tempted but were worried that they were maybe on the younger side and that he would grow out of them quickly. On the other hand I am worried how long a light sabre would last on one of the £8.99 models. They are totally fab though. Whoever thought that it would be so complex Shock

Seen these, Carrots?

We still have Luke Skywalker's light saber - somehow Grin and you can buy all sorts of replacements on ebay.
We also have some of the Galactic Hero figures too - but they don't seem to get played with in our house.

I am torn. Age 7 seems to be a bit of a turning point. Our ds is a young age 7 iykwim, but I still suspect he would like the "older" toys before the year is out. As his birthday is so close to Christmas he gets loads just now and then very little for another year.

£8.99 per figure is a bit steep though Shock

If you were only getting one or two which do you think are the most desirable? The robots?

no, lI'd say Luke and darth vader. Remember that there are hundreds of star wars characters and he'll want to be able to collect a set to get the maximum enjoyment so look for a range with lots of characters or where you can buy a group of figures together

virgiltracey · 11/11/2011 21:33

why don't you look on ebay. some ranges like galactic heroes sell for more than their original price but others sell very cheaply.

Carrotsandcelery · 11/11/2011 21:35

Thanks virgil I will go and have a nosey. Smile

Ds1 is 7 and since he was about 5 he has preferred the original star wars figures. ( we got a huge box off eBay for about £15).
He also loves star wars Lego and a couple of the clone wars figures.
The light sabres seem to last remarkably well too

Tiggles · 11/11/2011 23:10

DS adores the lego starwars, but he also loves the vintage starwars figures - you can buy them on ebay, bought in mint condition they can cost a lot of money, but to get a job lot with the odd gun missing, or a scratch in the paint etc (which isn't a problem IMO if they are going to get played with) is generally quite cheap. In that range Darth Vader is great - he has a light saber that hides inside his arm and slides in and out (much better than the separate ones on new toys that get lost), there is a C3PO who comes to bits and can be carried by Chewbacca etc.

I'd go for the 'traditional' ones. Ds has some of the galactic heroes ones but says they are babyish now, he's almost 5. He has a lot of the new proper figures and approx a million or so it seems of the 1980s ones from when dh was young as well as a millenium falcon. He still has most if not all of the wee lightsabers but never really uses them tbh. Plays a lot with his proper lightsabers though although he doesn't have a fancy light up one or anything.

Has he got the films?
