Believing in Santa...

Ds aged 8 is cynical - he's been told by school friends that mum and dad buy and wrap the presents.
Dd is 11 and still believes - do I disillusion her to avoid her being teased by friends (she's in year 7) or do I just allow her to believe for as long as possible?

Hi i told my eldest son there was no santa just before he started year 8 as i didnt want him being teased. My other two sons in year 6 and 7 dont believe at all as their friends told them there is no santa ,tho i havent confirmed it or denied it when they ask.

Are you sure your 11-year-old really believes, or just isn't expressing doubt to avoid upsetting you and/or her brother? Or just to make sure she still gets the stocking? I find it hard to believe that an 11-year-old hasn't worked it out yet (DD is 9 and started being sceptical several years ago).

I believed until I was 13. Yes 13! I wasn't a young 13 either. I think its lovely that your dd believes . Let her believe for as long as possible I say!

Jeepers I still believe in him, and I'm 41 in December.

I saw a "Santa" in Europapark and I nearly burst into tears he was so realistic!

It sounds like she is keeping a little schtum and joining in the excitement with her younger sibling.

When we moved here all the kids told DS that the Christchild came with the presents not Santa, he didn't give up hope though! There is an actual Saint, who the rest of Europe celebrate on the 6th December. This is where the idea of Santa comes from. In Switzerland kids leave their shoes outside and get a little hessian sack full of sweets and nuts.

Every country has a version - Sinterklaas in Netherlands, Tomte in Sweden - perhpas read up on the history and chat about it with your dc's. How does he get in the house, how does he get round the world etc? Then you could measure the level of cynicism?

Are you telling me he isn't real? NOOOOOOO!

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 08/11/2011 14:28

Of course he is mamma, let me give you a cuddle....

TheRhubarb · 08/11/2011 14:30

My kids have never believed. They knew from the outset.

MamaPizza · 08/11/2011 17:16

Thank you, bin.

Sorry Mama Grin. I think she's desperate to believe, but knows in her heart that Santa may resemble her Daddy!
