My 5yo DS is a very sensitive lad and a bit immature and has just started getting into superheros. He seems to have plucked a love of Batman out of thin air and I was hoping to maybe get him a batman book/DVD/toy for xmas. I figured i could do with working on this interest a bit as when he plays with other boys his age he seems a bit lost with all the superhero type play and I don't like to see him left out. Basically anyone know of a very tame Batman book or DVD or other superhero stuff with minimal scariness/violence (he was scared of Rio!)?

There is a film version of the old Batman TV series with Adam West, it's very 'of it's time' though Grin. My lot think all tha cartoon style 'crash, bang, wallop' captions are hilarious.

Otherwise there is an animated series which I think is for children.

Does he have a Wii/DS or anything? THe Lego Batman game is very cool, and no one dies, the figures just jump back together if they get hit.
Lego are releasing Batman sets again next year, but not much good for Christmas I guess!

There is a Batman mask on Amazon for about £4, my son (3) lived in it for a few months, with an old black cape.

Imaginext do a Batcave too, with a couple of figures.

batman costume

How is he with dressing up?

paddypoopants · 03/11/2011 16:31

Ds is getting an Imaginext batcave for xmas- although I waited until it was on special offer in Argos. Imaginext also do a batmobile. DS is superhero mad and actually it's the costumes that he loves the best.
We've found the Batman programmes to be a bit scary( I think they're called Batman - the bold and the brave) and the Adam West ones aren't scary just mad and a bit complicated for wee ones. (DS is 3 however)

We don't have a Wii/DS although he would absolutely love one! He adores dressing up and would like a costume but I was wondering at 5 whether he'd grow out of dressing up soon (not out of the costumes, hes diddy but out of the whole dressing up idea??!!) Paddypoopants his top says Batman the brave and the bold and I had a look online but couldn't work out how scarey they'd be but if they scare your 3 yo DS they'd scare mine as he is very soft. The Adam West ones, would they likely be the ones I can vaguely remember as a kid with the words pow bang crash etc written up on the screen?!

I wondered about the imaginext stuff, is it good quality as it seemed a bit pricey when I saw it in Boots, his eyes lit up mind when he spotted it!

The Adam West ones are the old TV ones, yes.

We had the Imaginext Batmobile, but the Batman that came with it was a bit rubbish, and snapped in half. That, and the fact that the Batmobile did not look like a Batmobile, put me off buying the Batcave.

We have some older Imaginext stuff, a castle, and it seems to be much quality than the new bits. We're holding out now for the Lego sets Grin.

My seven year old still likes dressing up, we have a box of dressing up stuff that is well used by them all, so I don't think he'll grow out of it.

Batman Pajamas

goingtoplaytennis · 03/11/2011 17:46

M&s have batman pj's that come with a dvd, I assume that one will be fairly tame.

BlondeBatgirl · 03/11/2011 18:42

My 4yr ds LOVES Batman!!!
The imaginex batcave is fab! Very durable!!! Worth the money imo!
The old series with Adam West is brilliant, this is what started ds's obsession a year ago!! But as someone said, very of its time!

Play.com have a batman lego bedset thats not too pricey. (Have bought this for ds for xmas)

There is a DVD that is called Scooby Doo meets Batman! (Have also bought this for christmas!) It looks suitable for small children. Amazon/Play will have it.

BlondeBatgirl · 03/11/2011 18:43

There is also a book that you can get which is a batman story that you can personalise with ds name!

Carpediem2007 · 03/11/2011 23:08

I found most bastman books too scary but there are a few early readers books that I got from amazon and have very basic reading level and pictures, i must say it's almost boring to read as at this level there are about 4 wors per sentence, but these were very cheap and very basic and non scary, rather old fashioned.

I also ironed a batman logo onto a nice dark long sleeve tshirt using Tshirt transfer and DS wears this as his favourite batman outfit improved with accessories from a commercial outfit that will never fit him (one of those one piece suits).

bethelbeth · 03/11/2011 23:15

The batman cartoon series from the 90's is ok as well. Not too graphic or too involved. Used to be on at 11am on a Sunday morning Grin

DVD's on amazon

bellabelly · 03/11/2011 23:35

My boys (4.3) love their dvd of the old (Adam West) Batman movie. It is bonkers and not really v scary (silly "scary" like wrestling rubber sharks up a rope ladder). It features the baddies Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler and Joker teaming up to do something bad (I can't remember quite what). I bought it from an ebay shop and it was v cheap. Couldn't find any ds of the tv series, unfortunately but it's on most weekdays on itv4.
