VTECH camera a good buy?

I'm struggling to think of something for DD1 for Christmas. She was 4 a couple of weeks ago so has a new collection of plastic tat lovely toys to play with. She isn't really asking for anything in particular.

Just seen a Disney Princess Vtech camera on Groupon on £25. I think it's bleurgh but reckon DD would love it. I was considering the ELC one which is on offer at then moment but the Princess one would be a real hit. Only thing that concerns me is returning to the retailer if there is a problem.

I have a decent old 4 megapixel camera I was saving but maybe I should wait a year or so for that.

Any experience of Vtech camera good or bad?

DS was given one last year and it still works. Good start!

It's easy to use and has some simple games which have been fab on car journeys. And it gives DH and I great entertainment when we periodically put the photos onto the PC Grin

Kids cameras are generally a complete waste of money. They are poor quality and expensive for what they are. We bought our 3yo DS a regular fuji digital camera that was on sale in Asda (so only a tiny bit more than the 'kids' version but a million times better at producing photos, longer battery life, better & faster charger and it's a real camera (so stops him wanting to use mine) we put in on a neck loop (with a fast release) to stop him dropping it too much and it comes everywhere with us. He looks after it so much better than his toys and he gets very serious (in that way that little kids do) when he takes photos. It's been abroad with us and on day trips out and he insisted that we take photos of everything in the park (um very close up).... A lot of the photos are well interesting Hmm but the joys of digital is that these can be easily deleted to leave some surprising good ones.

I think the VTEch is good, it's not too expensive and the joy of it is the fun you can have morphing faces, making people look like clowns etc. I reccmmend it

vtech one is fab,got one for my ds on his b/day & he loves it.

Though as there is a video facility on it you may have to check a) what they have been filming you doing & b)how long they have been filming you for

other than that it's great & indestructible, and that's saying something with my son of satan proper boy

We got ds the vtech one last christmas, its great. He still plays with it! It hasnt broken, and the batterys last for ages which they dont in a normal camera.
Very entertaining to go through the photos!

Dd has the pink vtech kiddizoom camera and it's fab. Lasted 2 Yrs without breaking. Only problem is the photos she takes! There are various pictures of me asleep, in the bath Blush, in my dressing gown ect!

pramsgalore · 03/11/2011 19:44

my dd has got the vtech camera and ds has the vtech camcorder and both are fab, well loved, played with and have survived being droped etc, this year i have got my 3 year old the innotab which is compatable with the camera Smile

Tiggles · 03/11/2011 20:55

I bought DS1 a bog standard £15 camera from ASDA it has survived a trip through the washing machine and being dropped. Anyone I know who has had the Vtech camera has been bitterly disappointed with quality.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/11/2011 21:00

The first Vtech one we had broke after 6 months or so, ELC replaced it no quibble. The DCs did like the ability to put funny hats on people etc in the photos, but the battery life was the main problem and it is quite heavy and bulky so we never took it out to places. DD has my old digital camera now she is 5 and it is much more reliable. We never got round to playing the games on the Vtech.

Mavend · 03/11/2011 21:01

I liked the Vtech, bought it for sn dd and it has been dropped a whole bunch of times, once all the way downstairs over the bannister, and it still works.Lets face it a small child (well mine anyhow) are bound to drop them and I think most "Adult" digital cameras aren't as hardy (my 7 year old non disabled one accidentally dropped my camera on the floor and broke it last week so this is a subject close to my heart atm!)Thumbs up for the v tech one from here.

cazzybabs · 03/11/2011 22:42

If you care about picture quality - don't buy it

if you want something durable, easy to use but takes crap quality pictures buy the Vtech.

Pigleychez · 03/11/2011 23:02

DD1 has the princess Vtech camera which she got for her 3rd Birthday.
Its been a HUGE hit with both her and her 17mths old sister! There are numerous arguments over it.

DD1 loves the fact that you can add princesses to your photos. We have a collection of photos with Daddy and Cinderella, Belle etc :) You can also add pretty frames round your pictures too.

Picture quality isnt top notch but fine for a kids camera. We have printed some out A4 size and the picture looks fine.
Batteries seem to last a reasonable amount of time too.

Yes its pretty garish but all those pink glittery buttons are a little girls dream. :)

Pigleychez · 03/11/2011 23:03

If you like I can email you some of DD's pictures so you can see the quality.

Heavensmells · 03/11/2011 23:16

Make sure you buy an SD card too as they don't store many photos in them.

Allegrogirl · 04/11/2011 14:31

Thanks very much for all the replies everyone. They're mostly positive. I've decided to buy the camera as at £25 it's a bargain. It holds 500 photos which should be plenty. Hopefully the camera will be robust enough for DD1 to muck about with, plus DD2 who will be 16 months and will not leave anything belonging to big sis alone.

DD1 can play with the real camera in a few months time, under supervision, when DD2 is tethered out of harms way.

Where did you find it for £25? I want to get one for DS, but the cheapest I have found is £38. Are we talking about the newer version, the Twist?

Allegrogirl · 04/11/2011 14:41

mamapizza it was a Groupon deal, where you register for daily deals for goods and services. Lots of local ones plus national ones likes this one. It was only the Princess one and I don't think your DS would like it. Verrryyy pink and sparkly.

It's only the third time I've used Groupon and I'm always a little nervous about it.

The ELC Digicool camera is £22.50 at the moment. Not sure what that's like.

MamaPizza · 04/11/2011 15:24

Thanks. I think me and him would prefer the blue one Wink.

I was thinking about the Digicool, but compared the two the Kidizoom is much better so I prefer spending a little more and have a better and hopefully longer lasting quality.

Pigleychez · 04/11/2011 17:01

Allegrogirl- Our one has had its fair share of bumps and drops and its still as good as new. DD2 is 17mths and is like a magnet to it! It has survived her rough handedness!

Havent found the memory an issue. It seems to hold plenty of photos... Mostly of the floor or her toys!
