My best friend always buys me something 'extravagant(sp?)' for Xmas. This is because he is a single bloke who I cook for every day and therefore for a whole year he hardly ever buys any groceries. Last year he bought me a flat screen TV and a few years before that a harp! He has asked me this year what I would like for Christmas and I have absolutely no idea. He never buys me anything that could be considered intimate (i.e. perfume, clothes) and it's always something that I really just want (though I confess I didnt want a flat screen TV, but he thoughtfully found one that fit in my throwback TV cupboard).

It's so hard because I don't want to automatically assume that he is going to spend £'s on me. Oh, I don't know, I'm sort of hoping someone will come on and say 'ask for x' and it will be the perfect thing!

If this comes across as boastful or grabby, I'm sorry. I've just spent the last three weeks googling random things and I've given up now

if this is his way of paying for all the food you buy him over the year, what about a supermarket voucher?!

I think you want an iPad.

You sound like a lovely friend.

(actually it's all about baby Jesus not the kiddos Wink)

Well after the kindle suggestion I went off to look at one and due to the power of rubbish attention span and internet tangents I've decided I want a therimin! :) Thanks for the suggestions

Just give general suggestions e.g. "something drinkable" or "books". This way you're not suggesting any particular amount.
