First Christmas stocking for 40YO DP?!

I found out three days ago that DP has never had a Christmas stocking Shock This is a combination of a different (European) culture and having a Scrooge for a mother (he freely admits this). As you can tell, by my appearance on this thread in October, I am the extreme opposite so have decided that he will have a stocking this year (would have had one for the last two years had I known).

Unfortunately I have very little money to spend on extras. Maximum £4, which I think will go on Silly Putty (another first - he was v excited at the idea) and chocolate coins. I will use a leftover knee-high sock.

So far it includes: silly putty, chocolate coins, 2 satsumas, some nuts.

Does anyone have any good ideas for free or really, really cheap fillers please? Most of his presents will already be homemade (candied peel, chocolate things). He doesn't really read unless it's pertinent to his subject (software/computers) and I did have a look at the cheap stocking filler thread but any combination of those would be too expensive.

I would do silly vouchers however they have to be clean as his mother is staying for Christmas and I am with my family (she invited herself last week after all the plans had been made for us to go to our family homes). She will definitely take it upon herself to look at everything and Make Comment. Having committed myself to this and trying as hard as possible to compensate for a) not being there for the first Christmas in our home and b) him having to spend time with his mother (long private backstory) I'm now worried I will fail. I am desperate to make this a happy event for him - I find it so sad that she has led to him not enjoying what for me is the best time of year.

Very grateful for any suggestions! :)

In my house we always had a little notepad and crayons in our stocking - it was something for us to do whilst our parents got showered and dressed before jumping on all the presents.

one year I got a sew your own foam handbag kit too - wilkinsons do some really cheap crayon sets (20p or something) and small paper pads.

Unless you wanted grown up suggestions of course, but where's the fun in that...

RoseC · 29/10/2011 14:39

Grin Thank you! I have just discovered Wilkinsons... will go and look for crayons and maybe do some free printouts of computers for him to colour in. Can see his Hmm face now...

also these rocket balloons are fun www.stocking-fillers.co.uk/20670-00782-SF_STOCKING_FILLERSUNDER_ONE-2/stocking-fillers/Under-1-poundrocket-balloons

I haven't looked at the delivery cost on that site, but you can pick them up in places like hawkins bazaar and other toy shops.

UniS · 29/10/2011 19:18

Jam/ honey/ Marmite that is expected to end up back in the kitchen so comes from grocery budget
Pack of biscuits ditto.
packet of "love hearts" sweets.
Bubble mix ( to blow bubbles).
shower gel or shampoo.
It was always bubble bath when I was a kid.

UniS · 29/10/2011 19:20

Just seen you won;t be there when he opens it...
Why not include
A love letter.

Pancakeflipper · 29/10/2011 19:23

whoopee cushion.

I never got a stocking as a kid at Christmas and when I moved in with my DP he got Santa to sort one out. It was brill. It won't really matter what you put in it - it's the fact there is a stocking put together with love.

celebmum · 29/10/2011 20:08

Go to perfume shop/beauty counter and ask for free samples! (aftershave, balm, face lotion etc) Smile

RoseC · 29/10/2011 20:35

I'm loving the whoopee cushion (I will not be popular with his Mum), gliders and the free samples idea, thank you Grin He loves honey but my DM has already got there with that idea (she is also trying to make up for his rubbish DM) but I will get some chocolate. He eats it like it's going out of fashion.

I bought him some rocket balloons about a year ago to make him smile after his Dad died. They did the trick so he is into that sort of thing.

I may also get a lottery ticket depending on how much I spend.

Love letter is good :) I have also found some online origami printouts which he will love - he enjoys anything fiddly and brain-consuming.

I am also going to try and get a Royal Mail letter from Father Christmas Grin

Thank you all very much for your ideas, they've really helped. I've even managed to source a spare stocking from my Mum so no girl's old sock for DP!
