Old fashioned sweets

My dh loves all the old sweets like Parma violets, Dib Dabs and Refreshers.
I have decided to make him a small sweetie hamper for Christmas. Has anyone got any ideas of things I could put in it.
Also if anyone is as old as me, can you still get those sweet cigerettes and coconut tobacco anywhere. I know they are very un pc but when I think back to my childhood they are the main sweets I remember so I would like to get some.

salvadory · 29/10/2011 14:49

refreshers (chews in blue and yellow wrappers), coltsfoot rock, spearmint pips, sweet peanuts, lovehearts, drumstick lollies, sherbet fountains, have a look at the barratt and matlock sweet websites too.

There are websites like this www.aquarterof.co.uk/ which sell the old fashioned sweets and also have hampers etc - may give you some ideas.

gold bullion (sp?) bars, chewing nuts, - i have loads of traditional sweet shops near me- are there none near you as most 'traditional' shops sell all the old ones - may pinch this idea for my dh!

Sparklingbrook · 29/10/2011 16:30

In the BHS Christmas Department( that pops up every year) they have themed mugs and money boxes with Refreshers, Lovehearts, Drumsticks and Sherbert Fountains in them.

PorkChopSter · 29/10/2011 17:50

Tescos and Poundland are good for refreshers etc.

LordOfTheFlies · 29/10/2011 19:08

OP, if you are anywhere near a Mr Soms Sweetshop and no- I don't work for them- they have loads of the old fashioned sweets in jars and some of the wrapped ones.

DH and I drool over those sweet peanuts and the bonbons (toffee in middle with thick icing sugar)

I miss toffee satins...

LordOfTheFlies · 29/10/2011 19:09

Mr Sims not Soms. Pah!

Eddas · 29/10/2011 20:44

I did this a couple of years ago, google retro sweets and steal ideas from ready made hampers! Hold on i'll find my thread of ideas......

Eddas · 29/10/2011 20:50

loads of ideas on here

mmmm now I want some sweets!

FayHauntedKnights · 30/10/2011 14:04

Ooh, Mr Sims is an excellent idea, I second that one.

peeriebear · 30/10/2011 14:07

The best thing to do is find a traditional sweet shop. We have one in our town and they have everything right there, from sweet tobacco and liquorice roots to sherbet flying saucers.
No Crispits though :( I have come to terms with the reality of never seeing those delights again.

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 30/10/2011 22:36

Glad you liked it, I always find it very tempting!
