to ask you all to consider making Reindeer Food?

Every year, Rudolf and co work hard to bring us our presents, even if they only bring crappy self stirring mugs. If we all pitch in to make them some reindeer food, a delightful mix of oats to fill their tummies and glitter to help them fly, we can sell it at £1 a bag for the charity of our choice and no reindeer will be hungry this Christmas. If you use edible glitter you don't have to worry about any Little Treasures eating it instead of sprinkling it on the garden on Christmas Eve.

Christ. Well I don't believe in fundraising it's a complete waste of time. So I'll donate a fiver and you can like it.

Coventry, Middlesborough or Liverpool. Pick one and let me know what I'm doing.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 29/10/2011 18:29

If I were the op, HitTheRoad, I'd probably very politely tell you to keep yer fiver!

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 18:36

Why was the man from the RSPB on the telly last week telling us to feed the birds?

Was it all a big lie to somehow make money (not sure how that would work)

HitTheRoadJack · 29/10/2011 18:42

RSPB don't care about vermin, they care about feeding birds. Birds can indeed catch their own food.

bluegnueboo · 29/10/2011 18:48

Christ I never realised hospices weren't funded by the gov.
I honestly thought the fundraising was for the "extras" like a nice gardenBlush

I'll change my giving from now on.

MonstrouslyNarkyPuffin · 29/10/2011 18:51

It's a lovely idea, and raw porridge oats are great food for lots of species of bird.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 29/10/2011 18:57

Please do continue to feed the birds. They really struggle when the ground freezes over, not long now until that starts. If you exercise good housekeeping ie sweeping up dropped food etc, there's no reason why we shouldn't be helping our garden birds to feed.

Sorry for the hijack, Dr!

ragged · 29/10/2011 19:21

There's so much other food around here for the rats, grains/sugarbeet/potatoes for the rats, who climb up to sample from the feeder & bird table anyway (at all times of year).

I imagine that's even truer in cities with overflowing bins.

DrSeuss · 29/10/2011 21:13

Flossie, I'm sure her money is as good as anyone else's. £5 will pay for something.

Middlesbrough, please. It's principal supporters were the workers at the nearby Corus steel plant, which closed last year causing it to lose huge amounts of revenue.

Mrs DeVere, I seem to remember that this is a topic of which you have personal experience. If so, I hope you are not too distressed by discussing it.

'I tell people all the time to sod off feeding birds. THey manage on their own to catch their own food they don't need assistance.'

No, no, no. Birds in this country need all the help they can get. Populations of some species have dropped 70% in the last 30 years. The more fat they can get over the winter, the better their fertility in the spring, too.

Lots of bird feeders you can get that don't let rats of squirrels get to the food.

sorry for the hijack.

HitTheRoadJack · 29/10/2011 21:42

I don't need foxes and the like near my animals. The birds will just have to get their food from the city.

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 29/10/2011 21:44

I live in the city.
I have no intention of driving out on a daily basis to feed country birds.

How odd.

We have wheely bins. Very hard for rats and foxes to get in to.

HitTheRoadJack · 29/10/2011 21:45

Who suggested that you drive to the country to feed birds?

LaurieFairyCake · 29/10/2011 21:49

Is hittheroadjack Liz Jones ? Wink

HitTheRoadJack · 29/10/2011 21:51
Hmm
HelenMumsnet · 29/10/2011 21:51

Hello. We're going to move this thread to the Christmas topic

wigglesrock · 29/10/2011 21:56

Our local Marie Curie centre sells reindeer food packs every year for £1 - its a very popular fundraiser here (NI), my Mum has already bought some for my kids this year - I left it too late last year Blush

HitTheRoadJack · 29/10/2011 21:56

OR you could just donate money and not have bags of seeds hanging about.

Last year Argos were selling it for Teenage Cancer Trust.

All my family and lots of my friends bought it.

No ecological disasters seemed to have happened thus far that I could put down to over use of glitter oatmeal...

DrSeuss · 29/10/2011 22:12

Well done Fidgety!

How odd that you should think fundraising a waste of time. Without fundraising there would be no such thing as childrens hospices in the UK. Nowhere for respite, palliative, end of life of bereavement support for children with life limiting diseases and their families.

Yup sure, what a bloody waste of time.

laptopdancer · 30/10/2011 09:12

Im sure fundraising is good but glitter oatmeal just isnt the tradition here where I am.
