My subscription copy of Essentials magazine (December) arrived today.

I haven't opened it yet (being Adult emoticon) I am waiting til after Hallowe'en.
Considering waiting to buy Good Housekeeping, Woman & Home and Prima then lounging about on the sofa with a mug of coffee and a packet of Jaffa Cakes.

Sounds lovely [hsmile], think I might just do that myself.

I get Red mag every month but i always really look forward to the December issue. Its usually massive and a bit heavy to lug home lol but i just use a bigger bag.

Saltire · 02/11/2011 08:27

Every christmas Eve since Ds1 was born DH buys me a couple of those magazines, pours me a glass of wine then runs me a big hot bath Grin. He then takes children and dog out for an hour. Bliss. Although my Essentials (subscription from MIL) did arrive today, don't know if I can leave it Dec 24th though!

I've had some good recipes from magazines, which have been used a lot at Christmas. And I like to see the decorated rooms and indulge in fireplace envy (sadly no fireplace here) and been inspired to do some of their ideas.

Catsmamma · 02/11/2011 12:21

My december olive magazine arrived three days ago! I have ooooohhhh-ed and aaaahhhhhed at all the recipes already!

CaptainMartinCrieff · 02/11/2011 12:23

You really can't beat the December Good Housekeeping. I look forward to it every year! Smile

Listzilla · 02/11/2011 12:39

I used to get Good Food every December but I've gone off it in the last couple of years. The ads are overwhelming and I don't need any more recipes - my christmas menu is finally set in stone forever now that I have Nigella Christmas.

I liked the homey ones too but there's really no point in those either, we have enough decorations and I can't justify changing them every year because magazine tells me to.

It's a bit sad, I'm going to miss my annual magazine fix : (

I'm a home magazine addict - particularly Ideal Home and 25 Beautiful Homes and always look forward to the Christmas editions. Also bought Ideal Home's Christmas magazine the other day. Haven't looked at it yet - waiting until I have proper peace and quiet (and glass of vino) to properly enjoy it!

nickelbabe · 02/11/2011 13:17

ooh, no, I got my Good Food yesterday, and I've already read it!
that's half the fun, isn't it?

It feels very weird reading about christmas dinner when it's really warm outside, but it's still good fun.

LordOfTheFlies · 02/11/2011 14:16

I have Good Housekeeping Christmas magazine in my sticky little hands right now.

TBH I never deviate from our Christmas Dinner, it works for us. I think it's only once a year, I don't want to be disappointed.
There's the rest of the year to try different things.

I'm with you about Christmas dinner, LOTF.

DH wants it the same as always, since we moved into this house nine years ago. It was our first married Christmas, and we had elderly FIL to stay. The only thing we have changed is the dessert, the main meal is exactly the same, using the same magazine recipes each year. As DH says, "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

It means I can do it all on automatic pilot, doing the same every year!

nickelbabe · 02/11/2011 16:40

I agree, too.
But we use the ideas in the magazine at other times of the season. :)

Billster · 02/11/2011 16:48

Saltire - can I borrow your husband this year please!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 02/11/2011 19:16

Actually Saltire can I borrow him too, or you could make a bit of extra cash for Christmans and have an MN auction Grin

Billster · 09/11/2011 14:44

JJJ I will be saving ferociously to outbid you!

Saltire · 10/11/2011 10:58

No none of you are getting him! He's not great all the time you know Wink. Even though our Dses are now 13 and11 he still takes them out, usually with the dog for a long walk or sometimes just along to the pub for a game of snooker, or to the cinema. it was even more apprecaited by me when i worked in a high street shop and worked till 2pm on Christmas Eve - he used to have lunch ready as well as the wine and bath!
