Lego Hogwarts Castle

Does anyone have the Lego Hogwarts Castle (4842) already made up?

Our middle son is getting one for Christmas, but to save many lost hours on Christmas Day, we're making it up in advance (he is getting other sets he can build himself!).

I want to build it 'on' something, a box lid, or small Ikea coffe table, so that we can move it about.

Do any of you know what the base area is? I can find height etc. online, but I think it opens on a hinge, and I need to know what sort of size we'd need for a base.

We have the main Hogwarts (can't remember its number) - got it last year, and gave it to DS boxed. Much of the fun for him is building the kits himself but he was 7 when he got his - if your DS is younger, I can imagine why you want to make it up beforehand!

DS has two pieces of MDF board which we got from Homebase for his playing - he builds Lego on them as well as setting up other games and they can easily be shifted from room to room as they don't weigh too much and can be propped up against a wall when not use. They are 2 ft by 3 ft each. Hogwarts fits comfortably onto one of those with room to play around it, iyswim.

Ds2 has it. It is approx 54cm when opened out. it can be opend or closed. DS2 has his on a shelf in the bedroom where it stays up, and he jsut lifts it down to play with

there are 3 pieces all hinged, thats what I mean when I say opened up!

Isn't the point of lego that you build it!?

Admit it, you just want to build it yourself, don't you? I know I do! We've bought the same set for DS and I'm not sure he'll 'play' with it all that much, but he'll spend hours building it.

Thank you all Thanks.

Yes, the point of lego is that you build it, but middle son is 5, and minifigs are the main attraction Grin.

He does like scenes to put them in, but I'm not sure that we could spare the hours required to build the castle on Christmas Day, and I'm certain that he won't have the patience to wait!

We have 3 other children, two of the others are also getting Lego sets, 10 people in a tiny house over Christmas, and even if we don't have a partridge in a pear tree, it's highly likely that one of us will lose the plot and chuck the turkey into a hedge Grin.

Building it in advance gives me a fighting chance at remaining cheerfully festive, instead of blind drunk Blush.

The small square lack table from IKEA is ideal.

The castle would be quite difficult for a 5 year old to build. There are 10 bags of lego and they all make up a single room. Apart from the great hall which takes two bags. Maybe you fc could make up two towers and leave the other tower and characters for DS to help with.
