i ask because i have a black slim tree with matching decs [black and silver], i have now changed the decor in the front room and dp says its time we had a green tree and assorted decs, i have always gone with a colour scheme, so do i just buy random nice decs for the tree, what ever the colour and let the kids decorate it Shock may have to redecorate when they go to bed

Prams, why not advertise your existing tree and/or decs for sale in the local paper, then put the cash towards a new tree and decs? You'd be surprised at how many people would like a good quality tree second hand because they moved house/changed decor/ need a slim tree or a second tree, or are just plain broke.

I have a 5ft 6in artificial green tree from an American company, and decorate with red and gold, with plain static lights. The decs are a variety of shapes and textures and are now very grown up in style. When DS was young it was same colours but with child made additions, choc ornaments etc.

knittedbreast · 22/09/2011 17:46

ours is sally 6ft tall and is real Nordman Fir- the dark green ones with the silvery underside too the leaves absoltly beautiful! and the smell!

last year i bought silver and white decorations and while they looked lovely i looong for my old traditional red and gold style. I think il go back to my old style this year.

those that put them up 1st week of dec, how on earth do they still look ok xmas day?

mumatron · 22/09/2011 17:57

I've got a 6ft fake one. It cost about £120 but it has lasted 7 years and still looks fab. It's really bushy and looks quite realistic.

I usually decorate it to match the room but with the dc's own decoration (bought 1st xmas). They don't seem to make any in school.

We make other decs but they go around the house not on the tree.

We used to have a train around the bottom but had to put it away when we got the dog.

I love a tree with loads of baubles and lights on.

We've also got some naff singing santa's that the dc love.

Ours go up on the first too, but I usually take them down a few days after the big day.

Haven't got one yet, I fecked ours out of the door last year after 11 years' service. Needs to be fake, haven't got the space for a real one or the inclination at the moment. Was actually just looking online as DD2 could be arriving around Christmas so need to get as much sorted as possible sooner rather than later.

oldraver · 22/09/2011 18:41

I have a 6ft fake one that has a bit of a list and I keep saying I'm going to replace it. I dont like doing the lights so would love a prelit one. I usually have red and gold ornaments but not uniform a sort of mish mash. I do have some odd coloured ones that get through as I really like them

Tree ornaments were a sort of obssesion of mine, I like the brass fretwork type and have some lovely designs, they are done in a sort of 3D shape. I also splashed out on some Crown Derby china ones a few years back

ChooChooWowWow · 22/09/2011 18:56

Floggingmolly each to their own and all that. I'm not trying to impress anyone. My house is decorated to make myself and my family happy I don't give a stuff what anyone else thinks.

Beautiful and classy can still be warm and welcoming doncha know.

FagAshLill · 22/09/2011 19:18

I dont have one. After Christmas last year I took it down and stored it in the shed. Then we had all that snow...well..everything was runined because of a leak and the damp.

This year, for the first time since I was a kid we are having a real tree dammit! I've got my quotes already and cant wait for them to go on sale. Just need to buy some decorations once I have thought of a theme.

I've had red and gold, the last lot were cream and gold...I need some ideas if anyone has any.

Haribojoe · 22/09/2011 19:25

Have got 7ft artificial tree but is lovely and bushy looking, don't like it when you can see right through the branches.

Two sets of soft white lights, I like setting them on twinkle.

Random mix of decorations mostly in red, white and silver.

Have seen some nice looking slim trees which would fit at the bottom of our stairs so might add one of those to the Christmas decorations this year.

crystalglasses · 22/09/2011 19:30

A real tree, always, with baubles collected over the years. dc love to see them come out every year and we have fun remembering when we got them. some are from my own childhood.

CDMforever · 22/09/2011 20:14

Ours is a Tesco Finest 7ft tree and it is sooooo fine.

It has pine cones dotted here and there and did have cranberries too but DH went all health and safety on me and got rid of the little red blighters!!

I would love a real tree but because of DH's disability (Health and Safety Mad) I couldn't cope with the stress of it all....

Paschaelina · 22/09/2011 20:17

A bit grumpy in the mornings but soon perks up after a coffee and a fag. Smile

sunnyday123 · 22/09/2011 20:26

always a real tree min 8 foot! Love the smell etc of real trees and could never go artificial. The kids love going shopping for it too. I choose silver, white decorations - lots of basics from tesco, asda etc but also individual pieces like paperchase etc or fluffy snowballs from habitat

DoubleDegreeStudent · 22/09/2011 23:28

I'm still living at home - we have two (large, but not sure how large) real trees.
Tree 1 - The one in the front room (that people see, and the presents go under). White lights and classic decorations in gold, red and a bit of green. No tinsel. Maybe some beads my mum has always used. Gold star on top.

Tree 2 - in the "playroom" from when my sister and I were small it's the "fun" tree. Coloured lights, fairy from Accessorize in a pretty dress on top. All our childhood decorations are on that (including homemade). The main decorations are pink and silver (think high heeled shoes, handbags etc).

When we were small there was just the one "classic" (front room) tree so my sister and I each had a small-ish artificial tree with our own childish decorations on (and we used the tree lights instead of night lights - magical). Any presents from schools friends went under those. When it came to tree time we would shut ourselves in ours rooms and spend all day decorating, then "reveal" to our parents with mugs of hot ribena.

To display cards my mum has thick strips of ribbon that hang down the walls and we glue the cards to them. Looks fab.

My sister collects tree decorations when she goes travelling and so she has a "round the world" tree which is colourful and fab and reminds her of all the places she has been and it makes me so happy when I see it, because everything there is so special to her.

Sorry, bit of an essay. Love Christmas Grin

We have a big, real tree covered in white lights and a mismatch of old and new decorations and dd's creations. This year we also have the John Lewis paper tree with lights in our new kitchen extension so that will be more coordinated in glass and siler.

electricslide · 23/09/2011 13:13

silver

pramsgalore · 23/09/2011 14:37

they all sound stunning, i have decided i am going to get a green tree, will have to be fake, as real won't last, house too warm, and i am going to buy any dec regardless of colour, shape etc, if i like it i will get it and i will also let dc's choose a dec each and will do this every year, then when they leave home they can take their yearly chosen decs with them for their tree Smile. many thanks to everyone i do love hearing what peoples trees are like.

Premasgalore, that sounds a lovely idea Smile

sunnyday123 · 23/09/2011 20:08

if you are worried about real tree and heat - no need. Our house gets very hot with the heating on and we have a coal fire on in the same room as the tree most nights so cant get hotter really. We put the tree up the first weekend in dec and it lasts til after NY!
