I have been lurking on the Christmas threads and read about the Christmas Eve hamper.

Its such a great idea and makes me feel ridiculously excited about Christmas everytime I think about it Grin. Anyway, I would like to include a Christmas dvd or film for the DC's to watch on Christmas eve and a story to read before bedtime and would love some recommendations. DD is 4 and DS is 2.5.

Polar express is so magical! Perfect for that age! Or maybe the snowman? I think 'The night before Christmas' is traditionally what most people read on Xmas eve. I had my copy ready last year and then forgot to read it come bedtime :-/ I'm going to try to remember this year Grin

Jolly Postman Christmas is nice

messybessie · 17/09/2011 20:55

Raymond Briggs Father Christmas is lovely. We have the book and the DVD. They all get packed away in the decorations box.

Need new book for this year though so marking my place.

We have new PJs, a Christmas lolly/small sweets. Some hot chocolate and a ready made portion of magic reindeer food (porridge and glitter)

messybessie · 17/09/2011 20:56

I personally love a bit of Santa Claus:the Movie. Wink

Polar Express DS1 (6) and DS2 (3) watch it everyday in the run up to Christmas, they love it.

They also love The Night Before Christmas and can now recite whole verses as we have to read it so often.

jumpyjan · 18/09/2011 08:21

Thanks for all the replies - some lovely suggestions. Looks like The Polar Express might be good so will check that out. Will check out Jolly Postman and Rsymond Briggs too ...... off to Amazon I go.

We already gave night before christmas book which DD loved but dont think DS would sit through it.

Messy the magic reindeer food is sooo exciting - please may I pinch your idea Smile

Of course. It wasn't my idea, it is another Mumsnet gem.

Along with the trail of chocolate coins down the stairs from the bedroom to the presents under the tree.

DS told DH last Christmas 'Daddy, it was magical, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them' Grin I cried Grin

DS did notice that we forgot to clear the reindeer food up though Blush

LordOfTheFlies · 18/09/2011 09:31

My DC used to love Barney when they were little ( very cheesy annoying children in it and Barney gets right on my wick but its okay at Christmas)

Polar Express is lovely, it's usually on TV but has the annoying ad breaks on ITV so we watch the DVD.
I always watch the Snowman in Ch 4 even though I've seen it a thousand times Blush

YY to Night Before Christmas - and your DC will know the names of all FCs reindeer. (I'v had loads of arguements debate with DC that Rudolph was not one of the 8, because NBC is about 150 years old, and Rudolph was 'invented' in about 1940 or something.) Sigh!

M&S had Letter to Santa- don't know if it's a traditional book but it's the same illustration as the NBC book.

jumpyjan · 18/09/2011 22:20

Great another vote for Polar Express - thanks lord.

oh my goodness messy a trail of chocolate coins is just so exciting - the DCs will love that. Christmas at your house sounds amazing Grin.

Ooooh, The Gruffolo how could I forget? It was on TV last year so I'm sure it'll be repeated/ available on DVD.

We didn't have a line of chocolate coins but I did put a tiny teddy bear on each step one year! But DD collected them all up.

dearprudence · 20/09/2011 22:14

I still really love A Charlie Brown Christmas. The content can be a bit sophisticated, but the cartoon style is very toddler-friendly.

I'm putting this in our hamper (first one this year!)

oldraver · 21/09/2011 00:01

For books I would say Jolly Postman, Night before Christmas (I have a lovely version for younger children). I also have a Fly Santa Fly which would be suitable for your younger DC. There is also a Farmyard Tales Christmas flap book which is very nice.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 21/09/2011 00:12

Last year DS was 5 and DD was two. They both loved the book 'Father Christmas needs a wee'.Blush

DD was too young for a dvd but DS Roared with laughter at 'elf' - and has asked if we can watch it again this year Grin

gregssausageroll · 21/09/2011 19:47

Polar express.

Geocentric · 23/09/2011 01:16

At that age, maybe Santa Buddies or Santa Paws, both with the buddies... Can't beat cute Lab puppies for little ones!!! Grin

FagAshLill · 23/09/2011 14:31

I LOVE that idea! I'm going to do it this year! It's a bit of a shame DD doesnt believe in santa anymore but I'm sure I can still get the magic working on her.

Ismeyes · 23/09/2011 19:59

I love the chocolate coins leading to the presents idea!

I have just ordered the jolly christmas postman and elf, DD will love them.

jumpyjan · 27/10/2011 08:02

Just been on Amazon to order the Jolly Christmas Postman - can't believe how much it is!

Alternative Christmas book suggestions for the hamper needed Smile (preferably ones that cost a fiver!)
