Have been thinking about getting DD some Happyland stuff as she likes playing with her castle. Have been looking at stuff on Ebay and I would get alot more for my money if I got some stuff thats not new.

AIBU to buy stuff thats second hand. If I put it all in a big box DD (who is 3) probably wouldnt know.

That's why I go to the NCT Nearly New Sale in November - to stock up on stocking fillers.

see i don't get that why yuk? if i see something the dc will like why does it matter is i pay £20 for it in Argos or £2 in the charity shop, they will get the same enjoyment and that gives me £18 more to spend on something else.

justcallmemummypig · 13/09/2011 13:07

ooh yes and the NNS...i don't but much of ebay tho, i like to see the condition and make sure no pieces missing!

Yes! Old Duplo from eBay is great, much more choice compared to just going into the shop as you can buy all the old stuff that's already withdrawn from sale.

Yes for my daughter, no for someone elses. Blush

YANBU - My DSS calls me queen of eBay, he loves named clothes, and they are very expensive and he's constantly growing, darn teenager, I always buy his named jeans and tops from ebay!! Normally £25 - £30 new, £3 on ebay!!!

I got my DD (3) a fully furnished wooden Plan Toys dollhouse for Christmas, it was used but in great condition and only a few years old. It would have cost about 150 pounds new and I only paid 50 pounds.

I did buy it in March Blush (as I noticed loads of people were listing them in Jan/Feb (post-Christmas clearout?)

I have also brought Fisher Price little people stuff second hand, which was a good job as DD never really liked it.

I prefer that there is no packaging/no building things etc.

Take care not to spoil the DC with too many toys just because they are half the price though (which is tempting). I think they play better with less well chosen/suited toys than loads of stuff.

Yes, and I think people who insist on all new things for young children are insane.

Christmas this year should cost us in the order of $70. I have been picking up stocking-fillers from charity shops for the past few months and DD1 will be delighted. DD2 is still a baby and too young to care. We are comfortably off but I am tighter than Spanx. DCs will have a fabulous day, though, with lots of little surprises to unwrap.

I cannot believe the debt some people will get themselves into for Christmas. Why the hell would you spend so much you were still paying for it in June?

sleepevader · 14/09/2011 05:08

If I could find the stuff ds wants for a decent price secondhand I would. However as most if the stuff is current release Lego amazon is cheapest.

However new baby will be having second hand toys - both brought and handed down - next birthday/Christmas.

I'm also planning on using toy library throughout year for toys in between.

Also check out local facebook groups for toys/clothes. Lots of people having sort outs at mo!

Picked up a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge box of Brio trainset stuff this morning, DCs are going to be thrilled on Christmas morning! 25 quid on ebay :).
mimimomma me too - I buy DCs toys and clothes second hand but I wouldn't do it for my nephews and nieces, I do get them things new if I'm buying presents.
Must admit to a weakness for old Fisher Price toys - they're not always that cheap second hand. After a point I think "used" becomes "vintage".
