Christmas Pudding Vodka & Other Festive Spirits

Does anyone know how long Christmas Pudding Vodka and/or any other festive spirits recipes last? I only have one jar large enough to hold a bottle of vodka and each batch takes about two to four weeks to make. I don't fancy buying more jars as I don't think I'd use them during the year and my house is the size of a matchbox so no place to store them. However, I have about six bottles/gifts to make...if I start now will they have a decent shelf life after I give them?

Wow! That sounds bloody marvellous.

Which Nigella book was this in?

thought I'd bump this and say RASPBERRY VODKA loudly - made some 2 weeks ago, by bunging a handful of frozen raspberries and a hand ful of sugar into a jar with some vodka. Strained it last night, and MMMMMMM. Not only very pretty colour, but tastes divine, and the boozy raspberries were excellent with a wee bit of vanilla ice cream!

can't give you more precise measurements though, as my technique is very much an experimental but forgetting to write down the protocol one!

I had a fair few blackberries frozen for jam making, but after testing my week old blackberry vodka out, I made another load of vodka hehe. It's delicious, sooo nice, and I don't like blackberries!

Christmas Pudding vodka is also great tasting but in another way, it's got a strong kick but the lingering taste in the mouth is divine!

Roll on the next 100 days, I can't wait!

Can I ask you experts how long do I leave Xmas pudding vodka and citrus whisky before decanting?

electricslide · 17/11/2011 19:41

I made skittles vodka but we drank it all, it was delicious. Christmas pitting vodka is brewing. I've just bought two more bottles of value vodka in sainsburys and need to decide what to do with them. I'm wondering about rhubarb and custard sweets?!

mmmmmchocolate · 17/11/2011 20:28

I'm glad that this thread has resurfaced itself.

I saw a recipe for Turkish delight vodka in one of the Xmas food mags. I don't like vodka but I want to try this! It's just vodka rosewater and and chopped up Turkish delight. Nom nom :)

The rhubarb and custard sounds lovely BTW electric!

I want to make the christmas pudding vodka - but what can I store it in that won't cost a bomb to buy?

ENormaSnob · 17/11/2011 22:11

My Xmas pud vodka is still infusing.

The rhubarb and custard one only took a few hours and is lush. Very very sweet.

bytheMoonlight · 18/11/2011 07:17

What are you storing it in ENormaSnob

SharonGless · 18/11/2011 07:21

Oh good, will keep it for another couple of weeks then. Have also done the citrus whisky. I got airtight jars from dunelm mill for £2.50 each

ENormaSnob · 18/11/2011 08:59

Mines in milk containers.

The rhubarb one is in a kilner jar from ikea (90p)

got some glass 250ml bottles from jamjarshop online to decant into when it's done.

bytheMoonlight · 19/11/2011 07:13

Just normal plastic milk bottles EnormaSnob?

Could I keep it it plastic milk bottles to infuse then strain it and put it back into the milk containers till I serve it Christmas day?

Or does it need to be airtight?

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 19/11/2011 07:57

I mustbsay I am really tempted to make the Christmas pud one today, I had been put off as the recipes I saw recommend a quality vodka.

I have a bottle of Grey Goose in the cupboard and I am loathe to share it ruin it, if it goes wrong.

So I may pop out for a supermarket own brand and give it a whirl.

DoingTheBestICan · 19/11/2011 08:43

I store mine in old pop bottles & today i am making some cherry vodka,i have got a punnet of cherries that i'll half, tip them into the vodka & add some sugar.

I have also made some Lemon Sherbet vodka, very, very easy,i bought a 1/4 of lemon sherbet sweets, crushed them up a bit, tipped them into an old pop bottle, poured the vodka over them & added some lemon rind,i added a few tbsp of sugar & it smells lovely.Just give it a shake now & then to dissolve the sweets.

bytheMoonlight · 19/11/2011 08:56

What vodka do you use DoingthebestIcan?

Do you steralise the pop bottles?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/11/2011 09:03

I am so making some of these this year! I need to do loads of booze buying, then my first two things will be the Christmas pudding vodka and a similar gin version.

But I am very tempted by the idea of curly surly vodka Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/11/2011 09:04

that should say Curly Wurly - damn you predictive text Grin

DoingTheBestICan · 19/11/2011 09:07

I use the cheapest vodka money can buy,i dont sterilise the pop bottles,i just wash them in really hot washing up water, then i decant it into nicer glass bottles that i sterilise in the dishwasher.

mindgone · 22/11/2011 13:19

So no sterilising really needed?

AshaBoo · 23/11/2011 19:57

I am worrying about my raspberry vodka as I did not put any sugar in. Made it about 4 weeks ago. Should I add some now?

I do not sterilise as the vodka kinda does that.

Mars Bar Vodka is lush!

mindgone · 23/11/2011 23:20

Smirnoff vodka is on offer in sainsburys at the moment for £13 a litre!

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 24/11/2011 18:36

I just bought a litre of vodka and a bag each of rhubarb and custard and pear drops in Aldi. Tomorrow I Decant! Grin I figure that even if there isn't time for it to "do" properly by Christmas, it should still tast nice, since I like all those things individually... and next year I shall start earlier This will be my first ever foray into the World of the Poncetastic and Homemade...

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 24/11/2011 18:36

Oops, for £11 stealth boast malfunction there

GlitterKitty · 25/11/2011 10:51
