Crackers

So - I haven't bought any crackers and I don't want to buy any crackers because they are rubbish and not eco and I am becoming a miserable old git. However, I would like to have something on the table to a) look nice and b) be something that the dds might actually like.

And I forgot to buy fortune telling fish today :(

Any ideas for what to get (not edible) and how to make it look pretty without making crackers?

How about make some snowmen with your dd's out of old loo roll tubes, a bit of cotton wool, some random coloured bits of fabric for scarves & use a marker for eyes/buttons?

I'm making some for something to do with dd1 tomorrow

Thanks Lucysmam - the dds are teenagers though and would almost certainly make faces at the idea!

Any more ideas please?

What on earth is as exciting as a fortune telling fish? :)

wind up racing reindeer?

candy pooing reindeer?

oh, sorry, you wanted "that look nice" as well as "teenagers might like" .

Glittery party poppers it is then. Sainsburys had a bag of 20 or so cone shaped shiny poppers for not much.

Aha - party poppers are an idea. Am braving Sainsbo's tomorrow, too.

Does everybody else do crackers then? I always have before...

Does anybody else do alternatives to crackers?

We have done the musical crackers a couple of times and they are fun with a group of people.

I dislike the daft things you get in crackers like cuff links and shoe horns and key rings.

I have got Wallace and gromit crckers this year because you get a little puzzle in each one and we like to figure out a puzzle.

iwilldothis · 21/12/2010 23:08

how about sprigs of holly around the table, arranged around tealight candles?
that will look nice, but not as exciting as pooing/racing reindeer!!
agree crackers are such a waste. the one year i "did christmas" at our house I refused to buy crackers. the contents only end in the bin and they create so much unsightly rubbish on the table....but MIL insited it wouldn't be Christmas without them so she brought some on the day against my wishes Angry so....moral of my story is don't tell anyone you don't plan to have them in advance...unless, of course, you have more accepting/civil/decent family than I have!

It's only the four of us - dp hates them and the dds agree (reluctantly) that they are a shocking waste of money! M&S had some with little metal puzzles in, which I must admit I was tempted by - but dp put his foot down with a firm hand!

I was also tempted by the Gu ones in Boots - but they had sold out when I went to get them.

I suppose I could just do Thorntons jelly goldfish, or something, in tissue paper and ribbon? But they will eat so much crap anyway that I'm reluctant to give them more!

yes, wallace and gromit ones are M&S with metal puzzles.
