We're off to MIL for christmas dinner and she's asked each of us to bring along some food for the day, my job is the desserts mmmmmm, but what should I get? If it were left to me it'd be chocolate all the way!!

The only choice surely is Christmas pud, cream and brandy butter.

Cyb · 21/12/2010 18:21

Profiteroles are a bit lighter

mumzy · 21/12/2010 20:43

A pavlova and a boozy trifle using the egg yolks for the custard

MadameCastafiore · 21/12/2010 20:44

Am taking pavlova and tiramisu to ILS for Xmas day.

cece · 21/12/2010 20:58

Do people really have puddings that aren't Christmas pudding on Christmas day?

Genuine question. I would be gutted if I got something else. Boxing day yes to trifle and pavola but Christmas day! Confused

bumpybecky · 21/12/2010 21:03

I'm doing Christmas pudding, chocolate and cranberry roulade and banoffee trifle :) Best bit about Christmas is eating leftover puds for breakfast the next day...

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 21/12/2010 21:04

yes it has to be Xmas pud really with brandy butter

at a push you could buy some mince pie ice cream, or mince pies

Greedygirl · 21/12/2010 21:04

I am getting a different pudding this year, probably a fancy posh one from M & S...me and my Dad are the only ones who like xmas pud and brandy butter in our house. We haven't bothered with xmas cards this year and next year I am not having a turkey. The year after I plan to be on a beach eating seafood! I am weaning myself off xmas one step at a time.

FrozenChocolate · 21/12/2010 21:07

Well if you are not sure, why not take a selection? Say xmas pud, chocolate cake, chocolate profiteroles, blackcurrant cheesecake, banoffee pie....................etc etc etc etc..............

frozenfestiveflo · 21/12/2010 21:10

Ooooooh Banoffee trifle - could we have a recipe please.

Back to the point. I am doing Christmas pud with brandy sauce and a chocolate and orange roulade for the non puddingers.

UniS · 21/12/2010 21:15

bannoffee pie or chocolate sticky something, christmas pud and something light n fruity should cover all the bases.

IF your doing a choice that is.
Personally I'm not giving a ( real) choice, they can have compote of summer fruits ( from our garden) with home made ice cream in a brandy snap basket and as much clotted cream as they like (or a mince pie).

Greedygirl · 21/12/2010 21:51

Choc and orange roulade sounds gorgeous!

frozenfestiveflo · 21/12/2010 22:17

Greedygirl it will be if I ever find a miniature bottle of cointreau or else I shall be indulging in a big one!

blametheparents · 21/12/2010 22:26

bumpybecky You are so right, leftovers for breakfast. Yum Yum!

Eddas · 21/12/2010 22:49

oh wow, came back after wrapping presents to lots of suggestions Xmas Smile thank you

MIL has 18 for the day, hence the sharing of providing food!

I was planning on buying a selection but in my head christmas dessert is always a chocolate gateau as this was what I always had as a child. Mum always bought christmas pudding but I don't think any of us ate it, maybe Dad did!

I'm not attempting to make anything as I have to work until christmas eve and I don't plan on spending the christmas eve attempting knew cooking which I know would go wrong as i'm hardly Nigella Xmas Grin Although there will be 6 children at MIL's so I am going to make some fairy cakes with my 2 dc, even I can manage those. Just Xmas WinkXmas Grin

So far my list to buy is;

Christmas pudding
Mince pies
Chocolate something
Possibly a chocolate log but then if we're making fairy cakes maybe don't need this?
Something fruit based maybe.

And i'll need to buy cream/ice cream/brandy butter?

oo my kinda shopping Xmas Grin

We make a version of the Russian Orthodox Easter dessert "pashka" to celebrate - like glorified cake-mix with cottage cheese and glace fruits and nuts.

panettoinydog · 21/12/2010 23:09

yes yes to boozy trifle

Another good one is chocolate bread and butte rpudding

panettoinydog · 21/12/2010 23:10

I'm reaaly not that keen on christmas pudding and the dds can't stand it

juneybean · 21/12/2010 23:11

We don't eat christmas pud in this house because 2/3 of us hate dried fruit. bleeeeeh

stnikkilarse1978 · 21/12/2010 23:13

Xmas pudding is nasty.

I am doing apple and blackberry crumble for xmas day :)

stnikkilarse1978 · 21/12/2010 23:14

But I am also doing xmas pud, mince pies and chocolate yule log as I also have lots of people to cater for.

Plus cheese and biccies of course!

cece · 21/12/2010 23:17

LOL. In my family we still talk about the one year that my mum decided to do apple pie instead of Christmas pud...

My poor mother didn't hear the end of it for months... well seeing as we still talk about it... 30 years. LOL

panettoinydog · 21/12/2010 23:17

apple pie and crumble too humdrum for christmas It's gotta be Special

emmanana · 22/12/2010 00:23

Soak a large handful of sultanas in a little rum, tea, and honey overnight, then drain off excess liquid. Chop up some glace cherries, (bout half a handful) and 3-4 heaped tablespoons of dessicated coconut.
Buy a couple of packs of vanilla blancmage, and make up according to instructions, and before putting in fridge to set, stir in fruit and nuts.
Slightly lighter alternative to xmas pud, and yummy served with a dash of Baileys!

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 22/12/2010 08:19

Eddas - sounds like a great list. I do a big pineapple platter in the evening - thin slices marinated an hour before in the fridge in a few tbspns ornage juice and passion fruit pulp. Its very refreshing. Or just some cut up exotic fruit eg mango, pineapple etc with some coconut or lemon sorbet on the side.

I think its good to have a lighter option if there are lots of people. I also think the trad stuff ( Xmas pud, mince pies ), with some Choc stuff ( Yule Log etc ) is great and the fairy cakes might be nice for tea. You could make them a bit special with some edible white glitter and white choc stars or silver balls on top of the icing.

In addition to the cream, ice cream, brandy butter fest, you might like to add custard. Waitrose do a very nice vanilla one, or Sainsbo's Taste the Diff Vanilla one also good.
