Christmas cake icing gone wrong - help!

I've just iced my beloved (first) home made Christmas cake with royal icing - the sort in a box which you just add water to. It seemed to mix up as per the instructions, but now I've done my 'snow scene' and left it a while, it all looks like it's sliding a bit and the 'peeks' have flopped a bit.

There's a kind of glob around the bottom where it's slid a bit, not loads but a bit. So I'm panicking and would v much appreciate some advice from more experienced cake makers please! So -

Is that normal?

Will it still set ok by Christmas and taste ok?

Should I put it in the fridge as I'm wondering if part of the problem is that I have a very warm kitchen!

Thank you Xmas Smile

I expect it will set, you just have made the icing too thin.

I wouldn't put it in the fridge - the warmth in your kitchen will help dry it out I would think.

I'm doing mine this afternoon so may well be bumping your thread with my own tales of cakie woe.

Thank you Claire - have just whipped it out of the fridge again! It doesn't look so bad now, just not quite as 'peaky' as I planned, but it was probably a bit OTT how I did it anyway Grin

Am now going to start on my Nigella Christmas Puddini Truffles!

The stuff in the box needs a good 5 mins more whisking than they say it does, imho, and if you add a bit more ordinary icing sugar at the end (not a huge amount, a few tablespoons), it stiffens it up no end.

I've been there with the sliding icing and the cake in the fridge... I feel your pain! :)
