Help please - Need a main present for my 12yo DD

I have 2 DD. 9 and 12.

9yo is very girly and has asked for the 4th year on the trot the Sylvanian Grand Hotel - we have this year relented and bought it (still quaking from parting with such a shocking amount of money on some plastic).

Anyway my 12yo DD has asked for Sims3 on PS3 and some camouflage trousers. I have purchased both. I have also just bought the Eclipse DVD. Her Xmas list really does just say the above items and "a nice surprise and some chocolate"

Both girls have stockings with little bits and peices in.

But what can I get my 12yo that will have a "wow" or a main present feel about it because I am completely stumped. I feel very uncomfortable that my youngest will open a huge gift and that there is a huge financial gap in the differences of gifts.

She is quite tom boyish and not massively into fashion, hair etc. Not really into music that much. She likes Harry Potter and The Simpsons. She had a rip-stik for her birthday 6 weeks ago, along with an Ipod and mobile phone from relatives. The Ipod has hardly been touched.

Help please!

Am just really struggling.

Erm.

Ice-skating/skiing, horse-riding lessons?

gillybean2 · 17/12/2010 07:06

zhu zhu hamster and some track for it? Thought my ds (almost 12) was too old for this but he got given one at a party last week and is mad for it.

or something more grown up...
tv/dvd player for her bedroom?
camera or camcorder?

frenchfancy · 17/12/2010 07:18

My 11 yr old DD is getting a watch. (on her list).

She has also had for her birthday a docking station for the ipod. She hardly used the ipod on its own, but with the docking station it is used everyday as an alarm, and for dancing along to.

SwearyMary · 17/12/2010 07:26

We have got DD, almost 12yrs an LCD tv for her bedroom. Its not huge at 19inches but she will be very pleased.

DD really likes her iPod dock, we bought a small inexpensive one last year but we are thinking of investing in a better one for her birthday.

DoNotWantAnotherMincePie · 17/12/2010 07:46

ooh can i join too please - almost identical dilemna for 11 yo DD (nearly 12). she has been crying her eyes out all week - she has no idea at all what to ask for.

She is a bit tomboyish, hates pink, 'girly' stuff. LOVES animals, wants to be a vet.

We don't allow TV/games stations in kids' rooms so that's out.

She has an ipod she bought with her birthday money. We have speakers/dock in kitchen/family room. Playstation already in kids' playroom.

She has 6 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, a tortoise, a dog and 3 chickens (see, each present day what does she get???) so no more animals I think.

She doesn't want an 'experience', she wants something to actually open on the day. Already got her eclipse dvd and a hot cuddly monkey for bed time (microwavable).

and that's it - totally stumped. Have this every year and would like something she loves when she rips off paper! This year we won't have dsc on the day so it always feels like something's missing those years anyway , don't want xmas pressie to be another thing!
we have budget of around £100.

werewolf · 17/12/2010 09:13

overthemill - can you get her a bigger, better version of something she already has?

What about construction stuff - k'nex or similar?

Camera?
Book on being a vet?
Microscope?
Some kind of sciencey kit?

overthemill · 17/12/2010 09:16

those are good ideas - off to look on amazon (we are miles from shops!)

TheYuleLogLady · 17/12/2010 09:19

Iv'e got DD2 (12) a Ukelele Xmas Grin and a teach yourself ukelele book.

she asked for a scooter but she's already got 2 (and a bike and a skateboard)

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 17/12/2010 09:23

Unicycle!

Actually my friend's DD got one when she was 12, she is a very able child, not at all girly, and one that liked a challenge!

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 17/12/2010 09:25

ooo oooo ooo what about one of those flip video cameras?

Like these?

TheYuleLogLady · 17/12/2010 09:28

Yes DD has a unicycle too. so many wheels in my garden.

1234ThumbScrew · 17/12/2010 09:29

dd1 (11) is getting, a ticket to see JLS, lego (probably Harry Potter), and art set, some clothes and a Gola bag for school. Oh and i-tunes card.

overthemill · 17/12/2010 09:51

in our house we have a ukulele and loads of guitars. She really wants a new guitar but as she has a 3/4 size one and isn't huge i don't want to get one until she is physically bigger.
has specialized bike - skateboard, inline skates -

see, how well we provide for our dd? the child with everything...unicycle? hmmmm off to google

overthemill · 17/12/2010 09:53

ooh flip videos are great but i think big bro would grab it for himself. now seen kindles - she reads soooo much now there's an idea...

keep it coming please...

SE13Mummy · 17/12/2010 18:01

Chemistry set? Some skateboardy clothing/accessory thing?

Glitterandglue · 17/12/2010 20:40

OP, is she even slightly musical? If she's expressed even a vague interest in learning anything, a guitar or a keyboard could be a decent idea. Sometimes you don't want to ask if you aren't sure you'll like it but then once you have it and it's always available you get more into it, you know?

overthemill, how about stuff for the pets? I know it doesn't seem like it's technically for her, but I loved stuff like ridiculous shaped toys/treat foods etc for my guinea pigs and hamsters. Some of them can be quite expensive so I wouldn't want to buy them myself - or I'd think I'd already got some and couldn't justify buying more and only using them half the time - but I loved to get them as presents.

amateurmum · 17/12/2010 20:44

Have bought my 12 year old ds a kindle. He reads constantly and also loves technology. It's a surprise so am hoping it goes down well!

overthemill · 18/12/2010 00:08

swearymary have any of these ideas helped? Sorry to hijack but this has helped a lot.

ontariomama · 18/12/2010 00:47

How about tickets to a concert, or sports event?

SleighdyBellian · 18/12/2010 01:16

DD (nearly 11) is getting a new bike as she has had her old one since she was 5.

What she doesn't know is I've got her a CD clock radio too.

Had she not been so set on a CD player (she like audiobooks) I'd have got her a digital radio, as I think they are the best thing ever. But budget wouldn't stretch on top of a bike so hers is the old-school AM-FM type.

Roberts do a CD/digital/clock radio IIRC.

Roller skates for her birthday in Jan. Quads, not in-lines. She is also desperate for navy Converse lo-tops but I am already embarrassed by how much I have bought her. Xmas Blush
