Rib of Beef here too...........much nicer I think. Plus am cooking Nigellas cola ham for evening / boxing day.

abgirl · 16/12/2010 10:06

Leg of Lamb because we all really like it and don't have it very often due to the cost. Also doing ham in coca cola on Christmas eve.

Lavitabellissima · 16/12/2010 10:28

Does anyone have the ham in cola recipe? I might have a go Xmas Grin

Roast beef, it's just Mum, 2DCs and I, and none of us are that keen on Turkey. I'll have to get some sprouts for DS though, because he loves them!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/12/2010 11:42

We are being cooked for on Xmas day, but me and DH are cooking for his family on boxing day. So far, with the help of DD and an Asda supplement that came out of a sunday paper, we are planning rib of beef, roast pork and some lamb with loads of veg and a nut roast or some other veggie option for the non meat eater. I am looking forward to it, we will be 12.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/12/2010 11:43

I should add that we won't be buying our meat from Asda, I've already phoned an independant butcher near my SiL.

SummerRain · 16/12/2010 12:58

SHould have said... if we're snowed in we'll be staying home and i'll cook the free leg of lamb that the butcher is giving on his loyalty card scheme, nly have to spend another 20 euros to get it and i'll be blowing more than that in there this week.

I hope it's my parent's venison we're eating though.... I cooked the first two christmas' we had kids and hated being stuck in the kitchen away from the kids Sad

arudolf · 16/12/2010 13:05

carp with potato salad :(

Although if it snows and we are stuck in the UK, I'll have to rustle something up - will probably do a nice roast chicken.

Iklboo · 16/12/2010 13:07

Piece of beef and a piece of lamb. Although I might bung a Bernard Matthews Turkey Breast Roast in the oven as an homage.

nymphadora · 16/12/2010 13:20

Ooh that sounds nice lilibet

PigeonPie · 16/12/2010 13:29

We're having a rib of beef too. I ordered a two rib piece from the butcher which will probably be enough to feed the four of us and my parents three times over, but it will be worth it.

We often have goose, because I can't stand turkey, but just can't run to the cost this year (hoping that the beef will be slightly cheaper!).

iceandlemon · 16/12/2010 21:09

Lavitabellissima capon is a male chicken which has been castrated (caponized). The caponization makes the meat really moist and flavoursome.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 16/12/2010 21:29

Roast beef if my PIL can't be here. If they make it through the snow it'll be turkey, because they're bringing one. Hmm God I hate turkey. Dry, boring as hell, takes three hours because there's no such thing as a little turkey, and you have to live off the stuff for days afterwards.

Ok, where do you get capon from? I love chicken! Why is SO much fuss made about turkey?

iceandlemon · 16/12/2010 21:38

Reshape you can get capons from independent butchers and online farm/butchery type places. It's really delicious - much nicer than turkey!

MrsColumbo · 16/12/2010 21:59

We're going to my parents for a roast beef dinner - can't wait!Xmas Grin

stillbobbysgirl · 16/12/2010 22:06

God I bloody hate bloody turkey, but they all love it here so will have to be cooked, along with a great big ham which my Irish dad and uncle will consume in 3 bites - they are OBSESSED with meat in my house full of men.

I wish I could go to Rivens house and eat a pepperoni pizza Smile

Piggles · 17/12/2010 07:45

As it was going to be just me and DH I was planning a nice fatty slab of belly pork roasted very slowly on a bed of apples and onions, with honey roasted parsnips, goose fat roast spuds, stuffing, bacon rolls and some cabbage and peas fried in butter and finished with cream and black pepper. (DH hates sprouts and regards carrots on his plate as a sign of the apocalypse, hence slightly unusual veggies.)

Alas, DH recently made an invitation to his kids from his first marriage to come have Christmas dinner with us... which they said they 'might' take up (And they are a right pair of last minute Larrys so won't know what they are doing until Christmas eve) Don't get me wrong, they are nice kids and I like them... but the little buggers are picky vegetarians.

I was so looking forward to a big lump of meatiness... no idea what to cook now or how many to cater for Sad

overmydeadbody · 17/12/2010 07:55

We're haivng roast lamb.

overmydeadbody · 17/12/2010 08:00

Piggles, you should still cook your delicious sounding meaty feast for you and DH, and just buy a nut roast for the veggie kids to have with some normal roast potatoes and veg.
