Is this a weird tradition?

We save all our cards and open them on Christmas Eve?

My RL friend thinks I'm daft - just open them as they arrive.

Actually I haven't met anybody else that does it.

Do any MNetters save them up for a Grand Opening (with wine and nibbles)?

God no.

We have to open them as they arrive as otherwise would be bound to forget to send to some people - ex-colleagues of DH who aren't in my address book mostly.

We open them as they arrive. Far too much else to get done on Christmas Eve to bother with card opening.

However that's the good thing about family traditions....they should be unique to each family.

I insist on new pj's, dressing gown and slippers for us all on Christmas Eve and new underwear to go under our new outfits on Christmas Day. Lots of people would think that was strange Smile

I think at least 90% of the people on MN do the new pyjama thing. You are sadly not unique in that tradition.

The Christmas card on Christmas Eve thing... well, that is a new one on me.

As they arrive. I like to see the collection grow as time goes on. It's not like it's your birthday (unless it is, in which case it would make sense) so you don't need to save them all for the big day. Too much else to do!

EatingAngelPie · 15/12/2010 15:17

sounds like fun.

new PJs sounds nice too.

DurhamDurham · 15/12/2010 15:19

I was more getting at the new underwear on Christmas DAY as strange. My friends tell me this is a bit of a strange (and pointless) tradition!!

New dressing gowns every year? Shock Seems a bit OTT...

Why do you insist? What would happen if they didn't have new everything/new dressing gown not necessary?

FWIW I usually buy socks & pants and PJs to bulk out the stuff under the tree/in the stocking.

As for the cards - sounds like a nice tradition, although seeing the cards litter every seface is one of the joys of the run-up to Christmas for me.

Surface Hmm

DurhamDurham · 15/12/2010 16:03

Who knows what would happen...it's not worth the risk Grin

My parents started the tradition and I've kept it up. We do recycle the older dressing gowns and give them to charity shops. I like to have a spare for when one is in the wash.

We're not talking expensive stuff, we buy our nightwear at Asda!!

I love our little family traditions but it's strange when you first realise that a tradition is specific to your family and not a general thing IYKWIM. Hmm, I didn't explain that very well. For example, we always had a toothbrush and toothpaste in our stocking on xmas morning so we would remember to brush our teeth after eating all the choc coins that were also in there. I just assumed that everyone did the same but when DP spent his first xmas with our family my mum did a stocking for him and he was a bit Hmm at the toothbrush. He thought she was maybe hinting that he had bad breath Grin.

We don't save our cards for a grand opening but every year mum would pick an evening and my brother and I had to go around the room reading out all the cards so she could check she had a card ready to deliver to everyone who had sent us one. We then got packed off to spend the evening hand delivering cards round the village while mum finished wrapping our pressies. I LOVED that job.

I think opening your cards in one hit with wine and nibbles sounds lovely

We don't have the impulse control here Xmas Grin

merrycompo · 15/12/2010 16:35

I like to put them up and look at them as they arrive Xmas Smile
