Oh gosh, 5yo is awfully young for most of them.
Twin Trouble, Connie and the Water Babies (there's a sequel to that, too), and The Mum Minder are the only ones that I would think were suitable. I guess Cliffhanger might be ok, too.

Hmm, I did wonder that myself (seen them in the book shops and they looked quite grown-up). Thanks v much for your suggestions - is that because the others are all about boyfriends and stuff? Or because they need to be v proficient readers?

too little, I think

(I have 7 yos)

I'd stick to the puppies-and-ponies formula if I were you

I'd try Dick King Smith or Enid Blyton's Wishing Chair or Faraway Tree. Mrs Pepperpot, Milly Molly Mandy or Naughty Amelia Jane.My Naughty Little Sister or Horrid Henry.
Jacqueline Wilson's books have quite bleak and more grown up stories that could be upsetting for a five year old even if she does have the ability to read them.
Dd is 7 and I haven't introduced JW yet even though she would have been able to read them for a couple of years now.

There are some lovely book sets on book people or red house that would be very suitable.

Noooo! they are for much older children :(

they deal much older things and even have some 'language' in them

asdx2's suggestions are great, go with them :)

ragged · 12/12/2010 13:11

The ones I suggested are not too grown up (no heavy issues, not bleak, no bad language or boyfriend chasing), but most of her ouvre has a fair amount of that stuff.

Thanks ladies - that's v helpful. My DDs are much younger so not in the know when it comes to these things (and we're all ill this week and confined to the house at the mo so haven't had a chance to browse). Don't really know why my brother suggested them Confused. As far as I know she's only been reading for a very short time so it sounds as if they'd be pretty unsuitable all round.

And thanks ragged for weeding out the ones that are ok for that age group - I'll perhaps go with something else this year and save them for later.

Thanks also asdx2 for your suggestsions
