Anyone seen any nice sewing baskets suitable for nearly 14yr old DD? She is doing textiles for her GCSE and really loves sewing and making.

All the ones I see have got an old auntie type of feel to them iyswim! Victoriana is really not her style!

Well I have seen a few nice ones but they are really expensive and this is just meant to be an extra.

Thanks Smile

Have you thought about the soft baskets often found for bathroom storage? I think Habitat, Ikea, Heals should have them. They're often less decorative, and can get messy inside if you're not organized with your threads and needles, but they could work.

what about this? they do bigger ones too

I aree with anon my dd uses a vareity of things from here www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?V=1&Sec=18&Sub=80 and various clippy boxes from places like lakeland. Pill boxes make good button holders. She has some clear ones from poundland. I had great fun filling them with old buttongs and things from charity shops one year. Vanity cases are also good they have some lovely ones around you can fit alot of stuff in them.

That looks fabulous I am going to have to sit on my hands to stop myself bidding. Grin I want to look inside it though

Look at p. 206 of the Argos catalogue for sewing and craft storage carry boxes and bags.

hi also vote for john lewis - was there last week and lovely selection of sewing kits and boxs - very trendy and girly ones too. I have 2 already and in no need for another but love to gaze!

I'm a big fan of antique/junk/charity shops where you can find good storage boxes especially if it is just for practicality. Or an office archive box. Otherwise, yes to John Lewis; for the future, if you have the opportunity, go with your daughter to one of their bigger stores, she can get to see sewing machine demos for example, ask questions, get samples from the Haberdashery Dept. Have a leisurely time there, staff are should be knowledgeable.

I have bought a really good quality moulded plastic box, it has a tray and a section for cottons etc from Lidl. I got my sister a similar one from Dunelm a couple of years back.

GrimmaTheNome · 10/12/2010 18:21

Oh thanks, this is useful - I was going to get DD one for xmas (she's just started doing little tapestry squares) but decided she has enough xmas pressies so will get one for her birthday in February.

tessofderbyville · 10/12/2010 18:23

Hobby craft had some nice ones on offer last time I was in.

Chatelaine · 10/12/2010 18:31

Very good suggestion from tibni.

MrToad · 10/12/2010 19:56

I saw some beautiful sewing baskets in ourlocal TK MAXX, very Cath Kidson in style but only about £15. I've asked Father Xmas to bring me one!

Polgara2 · 10/12/2010 22:02

Wow lots of fantastic suggestions thank you! Will go and look at them now.

Actually tibni that's very helpful because I also need a box just like that for her nail polishes as well!

I used a fishing tackle box to hold all my embroidery silks etc in. Was really useful.

DandyDan · 12/12/2010 13:57

I am going to do this for next Christmas for one of my children. My m-i-l found some nice sewing baskets in her local British Heart Foundation shop.
