I just went to ikea and got some red tea light lamps www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70175614 and am going to cut down some holly with berries from the garden to arrange around them.

This one is sort of cheap: The most expensive bit is the flower arranging foam - available from craft shops and florists. Then take the family for a walk in a wood and cut some holly or other greenery. It's worth checking which green plants are poisonous first. You may want to buy one of two bits with berries from the florist.

I'd also recommend a trip to the library. The books in the adult and children's CRAFT section are brimming with ideas

  • Kirsty's home made Christmas involved ripping up wrapping paper and then varnishing objects - doing that has an official craft name, which I can't remember. I think it's worth doing home make Christmas table decorations show how special the day is. My MIL often makes her a table display. Lots of the family notice and admire them - even those boys (who you think don't appreciate that sort of stuff!)

If you have access to wood you can drill into sections (silver birch is lovely) and sink tea-lights in the recess. Cox and Cox sell them for £7 a pop.
Greens cut from the hedge and twisted. I make lots of ivy rings.
Fir cones
I got two red candles and two mini fir-cone wreath holders from my local charity shop yesterday for 20p, have a dig in your local one?
Wire pine cones into a basket and fill with oranges, pomegranates and any fruit that looks festive-y
Write names on glossy red apples for place settings
Fill glass vases with pine cones, baubles or fruit
If you have an old white sheet, glue snowflake patterns - as in dribble glue in star-like shapes and outlines - and silver glitter. It won't last but it looks fab.

Long lengths of ivy, with battery powered fairy lights along the centre of the table. You can add cones or baubles if you wish.

i bought a purple plastic charger plate from sainsburys, and a tall white pillar candle. i have collected pine cones and teasels from near my home, and sprayed some silver, and some with fake snow. the candle will go in the middle of the plate with the teasels and pine cones stacked around it.

Saltdough decorations? Got any old candles you could melt down and make new ones?
