What films do you *have* to watch before Christmas

... to get you all Christmassy?

Our list is getting ridiculously long; there are loads of films the children watch back to back in the weeks leading up to Christmas, Santa Claus, The Santa Clause, SImpsons Christmas, etc....

But as a family, we always have to watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I know its ridiculously cheesy, but we've always watched it together, so it's part of our family tradition now. Somebody also gave us 'Jingle All The Way' for a bit of a joke, but we watched it, and terrible as it is, our youngest two laughed so hard they fell off the chair, so that's kind of sneaked into our list too Blush.

We're also watching Love Actually, Die Hard and Bad Santa (with our eldest) over the weekend.

Christmas really wouldn't feel right without them! Are we sad?

Santa Claus the movie, EVERY year, love love love!!
And this year we have a christmas carol because I have never seen it! Shock also it's a wonderful life, I was listening to the radio this morning and apparently there are no christmas films on on Christmas eve!? Xmas Shock

TinselinaBumSquash · 09/12/2010 11:33

The Muppets Christmas Carol and the Snowman.

PureAsTheDrivenShow · 09/12/2010 11:36

Scrooge (Albert Finney)
Polar Express

Haven't seen any of the others mentioned on here.

MooMooFarm · 09/12/2010 11:37

None on Christmas Eve? That's nuts! Good job we've got them all on DVD!

Oh and I love the Muppets Christmas Carol, btw! The little bunny singing about how many sleeps till Christmas is so lovely!

Definitely National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Christmas with the Kranks and Serependity - those are definitely my 3, althought also love Love Actually.

ProfYaffle · 09/12/2010 11:38

Polar Express, The Snowman, The Grinch and Muppets Christmas Carol. For me as a child it was the Wizard of Oz for some odd reason.

I put all our Xmas DVDs/videos/CDs away in the tree decoration box so when we get them out it's a real treat 're-discovering' them all and putting them on while we do the tree. I'm going to look out for some classics to add to the box this year.

Elf. And the Snowman.

I cry at both. Prob understandable at the Snowman but Elf???!! Still, Silent Night and Away in A Manger also make me well up too.

wangle99 · 09/12/2010 11:42

DH always likes to watch Polar Express, he annoys me though as he has a fit if I attempt to watch it before the middle of December. DD and I might rebel Xmas Grin

chocoholic · 09/12/2010 11:43

Polar Express and It's a Wonderful Life for us.

CheeeseOnToast · 09/12/2010 11:43

Elf. I also associate Wizard of Oz with Christmas but I doubt I'll watch it this year. I will definitely watch Elf though. And tape it

MooMooFarm · 09/12/2010 11:47

Prof well if you're around my age (30's) you can probably remember the Wizard of Oz being on TV every Christmas. Although I've watched it so often now with the children that I don't really think of it as Christmassy anymore. I do love it though.

Oh Christmas Tree.
A little known freeby I got with the M* one year, narrated by Marie Osmond. It is bloody marvellous.

catchafallingstar · 09/12/2010 11:55

Polar Express
White Christmas
Family Man (with Nicholas Cage)
Elf
Its A Wonderful Life
The Santa Claus
Jingle All the Way (its AWFUL, but a tradition my dad started!)
Bad Santa
Home Alone

MooMooFarm · 09/12/2010 11:58

dolcegusto · 09/12/2010 16:43

A Charlie Brown Christmas.

It really isn't Christmas without it. Good thing I brought a DVD of it with me when I moved to the UK so BabyScout will grow up with it, too.

SantasENormaSnob · 09/12/2010 19:06

Elf

Santa claus the movie

the polar express

jingle all the way

scrooged

gremlins

national lampoons (my favourite Xmas Blush)

cloudydays · 10/12/2010 03:09

I'm with you, Scout ! It doesn't feel like Christmas in our house until Charlie Brown rescues that sad little tree that "needs" him, and then Linus reminds us what Christmas is all about.

It's a Wonderful Life is an absolute must, also.

monkeysmama · 10/12/2010 08:42

Are any of these good for 2-3 yos? So many films have a scary bit in and dd just wants then switched off. We have The snowman.

DandyDan · 10/12/2010 08:58

Muppet Christmas Carol
Miracle on 34th Street
Meet Me in St Louis
The Grinch

Always "It's A Wonderful Life" on Christmas Eve morning, and the Patrick Stewart "Scrooge" on Christmas Eve teatime.

(Usually we watch a stack of musicals and fantasy films in the run-up too.)
