so i started a thread sometime ago asking what one normally forgets but i think its easier to do THE list (well try anyway) and add to it as i have definitely forgotten something. Am hoping this is the year that i don't! so, mine is something like this :-

Turkey (ordered from butchers) (got turkey foil)
b/sprouts
potatoes
parsnips
red cabbage
ingredients for gravy and bread sauce
condiments / pickles
ingredients for Xmas breakfast (here thats smoked salmon/cream cheese bagels)
ingredients for Xmas Eve dinner (JO's fish pie)
nibbles / dips
decided on no canapes as lunch is always huge
nice bread for sarnies for the evening
xmas pudding / mince pies
custard / cream / brandy sauce
xmas crackers
much wine and champers
extra butter, loo roll, mayo

OK, what have i forgotten?? Smile

It's another one of 'Nig the Witch' (as she's known in our house as we've decided she's a secubus of food) recipes sounds weird but we had it last year & it worked, with sausagemeat at the other end.

I personally prefer goose but one of those won't feed all the inlaws this year. It will moved to our New Year party with Nigel Slater's stuffing of new potatoes, garlic & lemon.

Just ate a tray of Waitrose's Welsh Rarebit nibbles - will be going back for more of those

Marking my place for when I do my list.

loubeedoo · 03/12/2010 15:14

Teabags for dad and step mum when they visit (can't abide tea, coffee all the way here!).

BigZing · 03/12/2010 15:44

My list (which I just blew a large amount of money on...am now feeling slightly sick):

Booze: a bottle of sherry, bottle of port, couple of bottles of mulled wine. Will also get some wine and bubbly for the 'big day' and some bottles of Guinness for the lightweights macho men in the family.

Festive season munchies: 2 tubes of Pringles, a tube of cheese straws, big bag of hiney roasted cashews (yum), some dips, a box of mince pies, 2 big boxes of biscuits, 2 big boxes of chocolates

Boxing Day goodies: some nice chutneys, pickles, olives, cheeses for cheeseboard, big box of crackers for cheese, large bag of kettle chips.

Desserts: Sherry trifle for Xmas Eve; Christmas pudding & cream for us + block of ice cream/wafers/sauce/sprinkles for kids on Xmas Day; tub of Haagen Daaz and some Gu desserts just because it's Xmas Grin

  • turkey, ham, sausages potatoes, parsnips, carrots, peas, broccolli, brussells, chestnuts, ingredients for two types of stuffing (chestnut & pork, sage and onion), cranberry sauce + smoke salmon, black bread and ingredients to make a soured cream & dill dressing for that.

Phew.

We will all put on a stone by Jan.

alypaly · 03/12/2010 17:24

GypsyMoth · 03/12/2010 17:37

chocolate log

what 'nice bread' do you all get?

we have a xmas eve tradition of mini sausage/potato pies......shortcrust pastry in bun tray, filled with sausagemeat mixed with fried onions and a little bacon, seasoned and cooked, topped with mound of mashed potato and fluffed with a fork, then grilled so potato goes brown!!

mums recipe from the 70's,but dd is making them in her catering class in school this year

alypaly · 03/12/2010 17:39

morrisons do a date and walnut and cheese and onion breads in their selecty range. They freeze really well and just need a few minutes in a really hot oven to refresh.

its nice to have a selection with the soup before our xmas dinner

BigZing · 03/12/2010 17:44

Pie sounds gooood, ILoveTiffany.

cheese and onion bread sounds good, too, alypaly.

alypaly · 03/12/2010 17:51

they do about 8 speciality breads and they are all lovely. i cut them in quarters before i freeze them so that we can have a selection each time. they do a sourdough and a linseed loaf and an olive and sundried tomato bread too.

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 03/12/2010 18:29

Breads we like: Sourdough, Sainsbo's unsliced Harvest Grain, Waitrose Pave or a lot of the whole unsliced white loaves in the Waitrose Bakery Speciality section. I freeze them the day I buy them so they stay really fresh for when needed over the Christmas period. It means as well you can buy a few weeks ahead as they invariably sell out of the nice ones in the few days before.

OhCobblers · 03/12/2010 20:46

excellent - keep 'em coming.

partic like the paracetamol, etc !
that will be required on boxing day - it made me think of another one - make sure you've got enough nappies if you have a baby in the house!

also, twiglets! MUST have twiglets on Xmas Day. plus do you remember the "cheese balls" that were very '70s ?!! might have to see if i can find those - loved them Grin

OP posts:
AvaBanana · 03/12/2010 21:26

Loved those cheesy footballs. We always had them as kids, plus a packet of Eat Me dates and a red net bag of mixed nuts in their shells that only my nan ate.

A little miniature of brandy to light the Xmas pud if you don't have a well-stocked drinks cupboard, daaahling Wink?

Guitargirl · 03/12/2010 22:06

Has anyone mentioned tin foil? We always run out at Christmas .

thereisthesnowball · 04/12/2010 12:34

Dates, clementines, dark chocolate, crystallised ginger, brazil nuts, marrons glaces

These are to be piled onto a large plate and served in place of pudding after any meals that don't have anything planned. Replenish as necessary.

thereisthesnowball · 04/12/2010 12:36

Also leeks, puff pastry, flour, milk, butter - for making leftover pie

tory79 · 04/12/2010 17:26

I see something crucial missing....SPROUTS!!

OhCobblers · 04/12/2010 20:48

tory79 : sprouts was #2 on my list (even though i hate them Smile).

DH would NEVER let me forget them!!
