Nordman trees look fab but they just don't smell do they?

I was going to get a noble fir but everywhere online seems to have sold out.

Should I get a Norway Spruce? I know they drop, but it only has to last from 17th December to Boxing Day, we'll be away after that. Would keep it in watered stand, and a room that would be kept no warmer than 20 degrees...if it was ordered cut to order surely it would last 10 days?

I'm sure we used to have our tree up for 3 weeks when I was little, and yes it did shed by the end but it smelled wonderful. We didn't even put it in water, just a bucket of damp bricks.

buy the norway spruce... stand it outside in gallons of water for 5 days before you bring it indoors. oooh nearly forgot, cut 3 inches of the trunk first to help it absorb water. it wont drop then

A Norway spruce will be fine for that amount of time if watered.

We always have a Norway Spruce and put it up about a week before Christmas and water it well. It does drop a bit (although our house is quite warm) but not so much that it's bald, at least not until after New Year. I think it's worth it to have that lovely smell.

I'd buy the Norway Spruce :) I have a Nordman, but only because mine is already up Blush

I think Norway Spruces look great - like 'proper' Christmas trees Grin

Fraser Fir smells wonderful but is pricey. £55ish for 6-7footer...

wildbillhickok · 02/12/2010 21:32

I had a Fraser Fir last year and although better than the Nordmann it's not as strong as the Norway Spruce.

Have ordered a Norway Spruce for cutting and delivery a week before Christmas. I think it will be OK.

I've noticed a lot of Blue Spruce around this year, apparently they don't drop much yet they are supposed to have the spruce scent. Might go for one of those next year, I will try to get my order in earlier - they'd sold out.

How about this for the genuine smell of a Xmas tree. Smile

I think I shall get my overkill fill of "christmas" airfreshers when I get to MILs Xmas Wink

Christmas tree arrived today from Scotland, it's a Norway Spruce cut to order, seems very fresh and despite having this awful cold/flu bug for 14 days and not being able to taste or smell a thing (not even a curry last night)...it smells great! Like childhood Christmases. So it must smell strong if it is getting through to me.

I'm trying to decide whether to put it up now or wait a few days and give it more time out in the cold with its stump in water...

Incidentally I bought some balsam fir essential oil around the time of my OP, when I was thinking of getting a Nordmann and trying to get the smell through other means, and 10 drops in a water based oil diffuser really did make the room smell like Christmas tree, but it only lasted about 20 mins and then it disappeared. Still, it was great while it lasted. If you could be bothered to top it up all the time it could work - and only £5 for a bottle that would easily last the Christmas season.

Balsam fir is supposed to have the finest scent.
