We did ours last night. It is always a fight. I don't know why, the children get worried because I am concentrating on something, and so start to destroy the furniture and hit each other with sticks.

I don't know why it is always like this.

But it's up, at least for now (used a bucket filled with gravel - was this wise? It's easy to adjust the angle, but doesn't seem to have fallen over yet.

hmmmmmm.

How sad FrostyBaubles Sad

LadyInPink · 28/11/2010 19:02

We out ours up yesterday and decorated the whole lounge too -looks lovely, very festive and cheerful!

Sad sorry to hear about your mil Frosty.

piscesmoon · 28/11/2010 19:03

I don't think it is too bad putting it up early as long as it is there for the whole of Christmas-if you take it down on Boxing Day YABVVU!

piratecatClaus · 28/11/2010 19:06

if u have yours up, surely we are not talking about real ones??? they will be sticks by the 25 th!!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 28/11/2010 19:08

Sorry about your MIL FrostySad

Ours will be up on Friday.

Christmas music is already on my ipod though, I had a lovely run yesterday listening to christmas songs.

I do love a good christmas songGrin

EnnisDelMar · 28/11/2010 19:08

Why?

why's it worse to have it up in the exciting run up, and take it down in the aftermath, than to put it up right near to Christmas day then leave it there till the sales have started and schools are back?

I don't understand why one is reasonable and the other isn't.

I didn't start the thread in AIBU btw and have no problem with other people doing whatever they like with their tree/presents/whatever.

Is there a rational reason why we shouldn't do it this way?

Sorry for your news Frosty.

Ours is up now. I noticed your comments on another thread Pisces, and you were very clear on your opinion that Christmas is about the anticipation, and that we are dooming our kids putting them up early, marshmellow test blah blah blah. However that's not what is about in our house, it's about family time, and nice things and just having special time together. I have valid reasons for needing to decorate early, but was surprised by the way you believe everyone should have the same way of doing advent as you do.

We're away most of December, but I'm working the 3 days before, long hours, so this is the only time I will get to put ours up. Have also baked the cake and a million mince pies to freeze & share at work!

Apocalypse, my husband is a true grinch and has bitched all day, but I know he wouldn't do it for me in those few days before christmas!!

piscesmoon · 28/11/2010 19:21

I hate the fact that just as I am starting Christmas everyone is off to the sales and finished! I really think it should be changed to 10th and people could get it over with!

MiasmARGGG · 28/11/2010 19:23

Maybe you ought to start earlier ?

ragged · 28/11/2010 19:37

Ours is up, as of a couple of hours ago.
DC next went on to write lists of what they want... too bad I have already bought most of their gifts! Blush

Only fall out was DC nearly coming to blows over which of the 8 choices on the lights to have on. They negotiated a solution only because I pinned their arms back.

no way its only november!

onimolap · 28/11/2010 19:57

EnnisDelMar: it's traditional. The Twelve Days of Christmas are from Christmas Day to Twelfth Night and so the celebrations (and decorations) belong to that period. Nothing wrong with starting early, though.

ragged · 28/11/2010 20:19

Where is this other thread (am I up for a Barney?)

Marshmallow theory is pants, btw. Grin

PeachyPossum · 28/11/2010 20:36

I hate the fact that the sales start on Boxing day, although we did pop to Lush last yr in the hope of a big box of goddies! Car broke down and we spent the whole of boxing day stuck by the side of the road waiting for the AA. Never ever again!!

piscesmoon · 28/11/2010 21:33

'Maybe you ought to start earlier ?'

I celebrate Christmas-not early December.
I think that the Marshmallow theory makes perfect sense-I was the sort of DC who would have been able to do it. Grin
The other thread was only the other day.
I think shops should be banned from opening on Boxing Day.

EnnisDelMar · 29/11/2010 07:14

that's the thing. I really hate the sales starting when they do. It's awful.

But it's now seemingly interminably like that.

Which is why it feels so horrid still trying to celebrate Christmas at the proper time, ie from 24th ish to the 12th. School is no respector of this, neither are the shops.

So I suppose I figured it would be best to enjoy it when we're allowed to, while the seasonal films are being shown and everyone is excited, not while the holiday adverts are on and Debenhams wants you to come and buy all the crap no one wanted in the first place.

It is sad, but I will take a shift in the celebrations rather than try to fight the overwhelming majority and keep the 12 days sacred.

Mine went up on Saturday, then came down and went back up yesterday, only for me to strip it as the lights 'popped'.
So now have bald tree until I can get some more lights on wayhome from work.
Tree will be complete before I go to sleep.
It will, it will!

christmastimemistletoeandwine · 29/11/2010 09:36

mine went up saturday and room decorations yesterday.

ragged · 29/11/2010 11:03

I am better at delayed gratification than anybody I know; in fact, I dare say I'm better at it than any of you lot, too (up for a challenge? Grin).
But I still have my tree up now because it's pretty, it makes DC happy to see it, and it's a lot of hassle to put it up so I want it up for at least 4 weeks before it goes down (about 28 Dec, I don't like it up any longer).

Some of us make our own traditions :).

loubeedoo · 29/11/2010 11:07

Ragged, by best friend puts her tree and decorations up during the first weekend before Decemeber 1st, then by 6am on boxing day takes them down.
I must point out that her tree is always bigger than her ceiling will allow, but refuses to cut it, so it looks a bit wonky. But when we're all sat on her sofa having imbibbed lots of Vodka, it looks perfectly straight!!!

piscesmoon · 29/11/2010 12:09

Each to their own-I am still having Christmas visitors on 28th and would hate New Year's Eve without it. I am not in the least bothered now because it is only November and apart from making a cake and mincemeat I have all the rest to do. Once I have got presents and organised I will think of decorating.

fedupofnamechanging · 29/11/2010 12:17

Mine went up in the middle of November.Don't care if is too early, I just couldn't wait any longer. It makes me happy to see it and it makes the house look cosy.

I will take it down on New Years Day or the day after, because for me Christmas is well and truly over by then and the DC go back to school around the 5th Jan.

Merry Christmas all Smile
