I ordered some wooden pirate skittles and they came today. Tiny wee things, looks like the Amazon listing forgot to mention the "mini" description on the box Angry

So I need something else to go with or will look mean and nasty. I know, I know but I've just been informed that his parents have gone to town on DD and tbh it's worth another gift just not to feel crappy about that. I am very poor. DNephew is one.

Being one he has few hobbies. But his parents are keen on cars/trains, wooden stuff, cats Hmm and maybe a funny gift.

Any suggestions?

You can't go wrong with board books!

SuePurblybiltByElves · 24/11/2010 23:00

Grin one lissielou. No range but I am poor, under £10 but looks like £50, is fabulous value and will last for years would be good.

I don't see him disco (never have in fact) and his mum is a teacher too and very into books. If I bought the ones I like (Dear Zoo Smile) I'd be sure to duplicate. Unless you know a hidden gem?

do you have a local ikea? their wooden train sets are lovely.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/11/2010 23:06

oooh, and asda have LOADS of stuff for about £15, there was a train set with table reduced from £80 to £15 in my local one.

FreudianSlimmery · 24/11/2010 23:08

Calm Down Boris (or another puppet book by Sam Lloyd) would be a hit I expect.

iheartdusty · 24/11/2010 23:08

books some ideas?

they have 'My cat likes to hide in boxes' which my DC still adore to this day - they are 8 and 6 now and can recite along with it - has fabulous retro 60s illustrations (but child-friendly) here

SuePurblybiltByElves · 24/11/2010 23:10

I love "my cat", I had it as a child. It was a family fave so I bet they have it. Great idea tho.

No Asda or Ikea. In fact, work on the principle No Shops Grin. Deepest countryside and shopping desert.

OMG DUSTY we had MCLTHIB at school! Wow what a blast from the past. Tis on my wishlist now, thanks :o

(btw that Red House site you linked to, is that a regular online store or is it one of those ripoff book club things?)

iheartdusty · 25/11/2010 20:40

Hi, sorry I couldn't get back to thread yesterday.

Red House books is just an online store for discounted books.

There is also the Book People , and Bananas and scholastic

With all of these you can register, and get a few extra benefits, or you can just shop - they don't send you stuff you didn't order.

I also get things from green metropolis (second hand mostly)

DiscoDaisy · 25/11/2010 20:42

All my children loved the 'That's not my .....' series.

Takver · 25/11/2010 20:54

You have my deepest sympathy - one year olds are impossible, aren't they . . . would probably be happiest just with a large cardboard box.

Do you have a sewing machine? If you can get some nicely patterned fleece (either online or from your non-existent shops) then it is very easy to make a fleece snuggle bag. Literally just buy a piece about the right size, hem the top, fold in half & sew down the edges, then turn inside out. Nice for snuggling on the sofa, but also for taking out to parties/visiting in case they want to curl up on the sofa & sleep.

This was a friend's idea, but I stole it for my nephew (then 1) last Christmas with some lovely fleece with a sheep pattern on it. Can't remember how much the fleece was, but I think easily within your budget.

Books wise these board books by Alison Jay are all gorgeous

FreudianFoxSquishedByAPouffe · 26/11/2010 06:46

Thanks dusty :)

I'm not going to have a proper look at the website now though... Already spent too much on the book people Blush

LostGirl · 26/11/2010 10:33

Wooden Build Up Train ?

LostGirl · 26/11/2010 10:35

Sorry, ignore that, I've just noticed it's aimed at over 3's so may not be suitable for your dn.

Dexterrocks · 26/11/2010 22:27

Fisher Price have rereleased some of the old classics. Tesco have their chatter phone for under £5 but is a large enough cube box so looks a decent gift. Being slightly retro it also somehow seems more lovely than the modern ones.
They do an old fashioned cash register too which is gorgeous.
Don't forget Boots do a 3 for 2 on gifts and have loads of baby toys.
