I made puddings last night and cooked one in the slowcooker on warm overnight, but it doesnt look or smell like a proper pud. it is anaemic looking and not nearly sticky/aromatic enough. the other one (that i cooked for 7hrs in the slow cooker today) looks and smells great. have i overcooked the other one? is it not cooked enough? should i just start from scratch?

Not a veteran as such, but I did one in the slow-cooker yesterday (had about 9 hours on high I think), and it is indeed dark and aromatic. Was it the same batch of mixture? Did you have it on low or high?

thisisyesterday · 22/11/2010 17:53

if it looks pale and doesn't smell i would guess that it needs longer...

but don't quote me on that! have never done one in a slow cooker before

OracleInaCoracle · 22/11/2010 17:55

it was the same batch, butr I had it on warm. can i stick back in on high?

I would stick it back in on high, sounds like its not been cooked enough.

OracleInaCoracle · 22/11/2010 17:57

ok, thank you.

A good 4-5 hours on high after a whole night of cooking on low would do it I'd have thought. Good luck!

Umami · 22/11/2010 18:24

Just remember to turn it off at bedtime!

OracleInaCoracle · 22/11/2010 18:33

thank you. have put some more brandy in and have my fingers crossed!

I put it back in for another 5 hours on high and it looks fab now, not as dark as the other one though so may have to put it inb for longer when I reheat. smellls great though!

Yay!

TeaOneSugar · 23/11/2010 17:25

Mine took about 15 hours in the slow cooker until it looked cooked and passed the skewer test.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/11/2010 20:14

I dont understand, I followed the recipe exactly!

I reckon it's because not all slow cookers were created equal.

thereistheball · 24/11/2010 10:58

You can do Christmas puddings in the slow cooker? I had no idea. Do you have a recipe please?

Umami · 24/11/2010 11:32

I just used the Nigella recipe, but instead of 5 hours steaming on the hob I did it for 9 hours in the slow cooker on high. Mixture in pudding basin, and rested that on one of those expanding steamer basket things so that it wasn't sitting on the bottom. Kept the water topped up to about halfway up the sides of the basin.

thereistheball · 25/11/2010 07:03

Thanks! Realistically I'm not going to be able to do one this year but will remember for next. Will you let us know how it turned out?

OracleInaCoracle · 25/11/2010 09:31

i used this it made two puds which smell fab. It was surprisingly easy too.

Yes, it seems easier, and somehow less intimidating in the slow cooker. I hate having pans boiling away for hours, filling the house with steam. It was really very easy - 30 minutes max for weighing and mixing (didn't pre-soak the fruit), into the slow-coooker and that's basically it done. Almost no need to tend to it, as it only really needed topping up once or twice.
