Champage as a gift for neighbours?

Hiya, we're trying to cut back on the expense of Christmas this year so with this in mind: I've seen a lot of offers on champagne in several supermarkets; we're thinking of getting a case so we can have some at home but also so we can give a bottle to each neighbour/unexpected guests etc.
Does that sound reasonable? If so, are there any particular brands I should avoid or can anyone recommend a decent brand on offer at the moment? TIA

Yes I think thats a lovely idea - think I might have to copy you Smile

I know that Tesco's own brand of (Finest) Champers won an award. Not sure if its on offer but they are doing Clubcard Voucher Exchange where you double the value of your vouchers and it can be used to buy Champagne.

Please can I move next door to you? I would LOVE to get a bottle of champers from my neighbours.

My favourite (and I am a snob when it comes to champers) is M&S own stuff. Forget about Moet.

gillybean2 · 16/11/2010 14:15

Why not get a box of scented candles and give one out to unexpected visitors/neighbours? Guess times can't be that hard if you're dishing out champagne. My neighbours are lucky to get a Christmas card!

Agree to avoid Moet. Foul champagne, imo.

M&S Oudinot is excellent as is Waitrose own label Blanc de blancs. Waitrose stuff won an award either last year or year before and we couldn't get hold of the damn stuff after 30 November!!

Thanks everyone, I will have a look at all the ones mentioned (and then buy the cheapest Grin).

gillybean2: thanks, the candles idea is a good one.

if you prefer not to buy champagne, what about a good prosecco?
Majestic always do good offers and their staff full of good advice and help.
i'd keep the champagne for you and prosecco for them Grin

otherwise tins of quality street/roses, etc as i cannot believe they won't get opened over the xmas period.

no offense to gillybean2 but most people i know have too many candles!!

CherryMonster · 16/11/2010 22:11

god i wish my neighbours would give me champers for christmas. i get a card and thats it

mindhasgoneblank · 17/11/2010 09:51

Prosecco a great idea-thanks OhCobblers.
I felt the same way about candles (as was thinking of that) but then just thought at least they can sit down and have a drink together.
Thanks for all the ideas, you've really helped.

I buy the English Vineyard sparkling wines, much prefer it to Champagne. Normally Chapel Down Brut NV approx £17 a bottle (but can be on offer) from Waitrose/Ocado or direct from Vineyard. It's a bit different, and tastes lovely! The Camel valley ones are great too - look for a "local" one to you....
