There was a thread like this last year, and I stole was inspired by the idea of giving my mum a nest box camera kit, which went down a storm - she loved it!

Anyway, I'm stuck for inspiration again this year and was hoping that imaginative MNers could help me out. Grin

My mum is 63, likes walking, bird-watching, socialising and red wine! She should be very easy to buy for as she has lots of interests and hobbies, but I always want to get something special, as she is brilliant and deserves it and find it hard to think of the perfect thing...

I'm going with theatre tokens because Mum and Dad don't go out much these days but love a trip to the theatre. They've got so much tat between them, it's hard to know what else to get.

My mother has asked for a new chopping board. yes seriously. Apparantly she has seen one in IKEA that is huge and has special features. No idea what she means but will pick it up on a girly morning day wander around the shop with lunch.

BornToFolk · 15/11/2010 19:26

ADream - she really is! Grin

Am googling Ikea chopping boards now..

Last year we bought MIL a private dance lesson with one of the professionals from Strictly. 'twas not cheap but she truly thought it was the best present ever. Fuck knows what we can follow that with this year though!

Eve34 · 15/11/2010 20:23

THOM - 2 lessons :-)

TheHouseofMirth · 15/11/2010 20:46

Eve34 sadly for us she's developed a habit for it and has been booking her own monthly lessons with him...

sweetheart · 15/11/2010 22:42

Ohhhh interesting HOM - how did you come to find out about that please????

TheHouseofMirth · 16/11/2010 18:48

Sweetheart most of them do private lessons but it is £££££ (we paid £200...) You need to visit the individual professional's website and book through there.

bogwobbit · 16/11/2010 18:49

A nice jumper and a years subscription to Good Housekeeping, I think.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 16/11/2010 18:52

I've got my mum a ravioli cutter. She asked for one and they look quite fun for a woman who already has most kitchen gadgets!

TheHouseofMirth · 16/11/2010 20:29

I want to get MIL a new gilet but don't know where to get thrm from. I'm looking for a padded but thin one and not fleece. Any ideas?

trumpton · 16/11/2010 20:37

Am doing my mum a stocking this year - she will be at ours Christmas morning and we all have stockings to open so don't want her to be left out! Haven't got enough bits to fill it yet, but am basically buying lots of little things (make-up, chocolate, fridge magnets, socks, etc..) to fill it. Apart from that I've got her a bottle of her favourite tipple and my DC's latest school pic for 'under the tree' presents.

domesticsluttery · 17/11/2010 13:01

RSPB membership is a brilliant idea, we have family membership and use it a lot.

My mum is getting book tokens and some chocolates. Which sounds borning but is what she will appreciate. Her birthday is just before Christmas and for that I have bought her favourite smellies and theatre tickets.

BornToFolk · 17/11/2010 13:44

Book tokens and chocolate sounds like a brilliant present, I love getting stuff like that!

Anyway, have now had an email from Mum asking for an ipod docking station so will get her one like ours. And the LifeVenture mug as I know she'll like it and use it.

Just thought I would see if there were any ideas for my mum and am now going to buy her some Ugg slippers - thank you Smile

Pinkjenny · 17/11/2010 14:07

Ugg slippers! Genius!

TheRedSalamander · 17/11/2010 14:08

Country Living subscription (she's getting me the Country Homes & Interiors subscription and we've agreed to swap them halfway through the month!)

and one of the things suggested on here, there are some great ideas. Think the birdbox camera is ace.

Twilightfan1 · 17/11/2010 14:19

As your mum likes red wine could you get her a wine tasting experience?? I know some catalogues do it, and there will be companies on line.
My dh brought me a dolphin experience for my 30th this year, although we didn't see any dolphins, it was a lovely day out.

Unfortunately I do not have a good relationship with my mother, so she will only get a token box of chocolates or something like that.

girlywhirly · 17/11/2010 15:56

Taffetacat, have you looked at the British Museum shop, they might have something in lapis lazuli.

I bought my mum a handbag one year, and put lots of little things in it, such as pretty handbag tissues, pen, notebook, lipstick, mirror compact, keyring, etc. She loved it, I was amazed as she was very particular about the style of bag, no shoulder strap, limited detail on the outside, no buckles and so on.

Would borntofolk's mum like some sort of bag to take on walks, a canvas satchel or similar style, big enough to take water and binoculars as well as all her other bits and pieces.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 17/11/2010 17:30

Taffetacat - this place has some Lapis Lazuli earrings. It's my FIL's shop and I think the biggest retailer of crystals in the UK so fairly respectable (although their website isn't great and I don't know how the service would be). They have lots of shops across the south of England and Wales as well, not sure where you are? I feel bad for plugging them Blush but some of the jewellery is quite nice.

In the past my mum loved cinema membership (not from us).,
