What size of turkey do I need to order for 8-10 people?

Never had quite as many before. Last 3 years it's been either only the 4 of us, or MIL and SFIL have been there, so have always got one from Sainsbury's. This year mum, step dad, idiot DB2 and elderly aunt coming down and MIL and SFIL say they might pop down for day - it's a 3 hour drive bTW so hoping they won't

I don't know if this is even vaguely right, but I work on the principle of half a pound per person per meal. I think I read this somewhere once.Hmm

So I've ordered a 12lb one - 6 people x 2 days. If you want more meals out of it you'll need a bigger one, but I hate the thing hanging around.

I guess how many people come will depend on the weather and mode of transport. (Thinking of last year, we had snow before and after Christmas, and was glad we didn't need to go anywhere!)

The size of turkey depends on how much you like leftovers as well as the number of people, and whether it will fit in your oven. I don't do turkey, but when I did, I got a crown roast from M&S which had the number it would feed on the label. I'm not clear as to whether you will order from Sainsbury rather than just get one 'off the shelf', or will order from somewhere else. There are frozen turkeys already available, so you could get an idea of weight/no.of portions from their label.

That's not right. One pound per person per meal.

Ignore me, please. Someone who knows will be along soon.

I get mine from my butcher - I tell how many people I want to serve, and he suggests what weight I need. I usually get about 12-14lb turkey for 8 people (three of whom are little people!) and slightly lighter if I order a goose.

Sorry, meant to put in OP, mum is wanting to order a turkey at her local butchers as she is coming down on Christmas eve - that's what she wants to do, but I am thinking, rural yorkshire in teh winter, will we be snowed in? Will they get here?
So perhaps getting one like we did last year from Saisbury's (off the shelf ) is a better option

Right. Found it.

Half a kilo per person with enough for left-overs.

Which is (more or less) 1lb. As I can't get my head around metric weights for meat I got a little confused for a minute. Sorry.

Half a kilo converts to 1 pound, 1 and 3/4 ounces.

Saltire, I'd go for plan B and get the turkey yourself. Although if you think there won't be enough or it looks as though things look good for travel, you can always do extra sausages, bacon etc to pad it out. I think that people eat so many extras on Christmas day, they won't notice a little less meat.
