Books for a 6/7 year old?

Hi, I'm looking for ideas for books for my 6yo niece, she'll be 7 soon. Her reading is good, but I don't think advanced for her age but she is an intelligent and curious girl.

I was going to get her some Jacqueline Wilson books for christmas but I've heard some bad reviews on here. She mentioned today some books she reads at school, is it Katie Morag?

So does anyone have any recommendations?

My friend also has 2 boys 5 & 6yo and if anyone could recommend books for boys too?

(every kid on my shopping list is getting a book this year as I refuse to add to the masses of toys they already have :) )

TIA for any help

Pippi Longstocking and Mrs Pepperpot
are both good.
Milly Molly Mandy?
My dd liked Paddington bear also.

Flat Stanley,Phantom Tollbooth to be read to them.

Lots of boys read Horrid Henry and Astrosaurs at around this age .

There is a new Mr Gum book out. If anyone of them have not read Mr Gum then they must.

Thanks for the responses.

I like the look of a few of them, Milly Molly Mandy and Phantom Tollbooth esp.

My DN likes to read alone but near someone so she can ask questions. My Dsis is worried that she is too far ahead of her years as she loves vampires and twilight etc so she wants to try and get her to "grow up" at an appropriate rate. :)

How about the chronicles of narnia? I got this around seven and read it then (probably with a little help) and have read the same copy since.
I love your idea of giving books. I love to read and always did and i'm certain that the masses of books I received as a child helped.
Unfortunately I lost the majority of my books in a midnight filt (sp?) From an ex. :-(

Your DN might like the Anna Hibiscus books by Atinuke about a little girl in Africa - not too 'grown-up', but lovely stories. DD liked them a lot at this age.

And they're only published in the last couple of years, so maybe less likely to be things she has already - I would think a lot of children might already have Milly Molly Mandy / Narnia etc.

dd loved The Series of Unfortunate Events series at this age, they are really great books.

As a kid I always loved books at xmas and still have most of them. An Aunt used to send things that my parents and the school would never have suggested - Classics like Children of the New Forest and Roald Dahl when the books had only just come out in paperback. I feel all warm towards her just thinking about it.

Some of the books would occasionally miss the mark and they would just sit on a shelf for a year.

So go with something you think grabs you and hopefully you can chat about.

The Ottoline books are fantastic - for boys and girls. My DS1 (6) got the first one for his birthday and loves it - getting 2nd one for Xmas. The illustrations are just brilliant.

6/7 year olds tend to go for series fiction.

One very popular one at the moment is Daisy by Kes Gray.

On this page, there's a list of some of them, and some of the other series available for that age.
(you mgith have to wait a few minutes for me to uplaod Daisy...Blush).
But I love My naughty little sister, and Anna Hibiscus and Milly-Molly-Mandy and Laura's Star.
:)

My niece is just turned 7 but is quite advanced in her reading so i have bought her a set of "the worst witch" books, which I loved as a child, so hopefully she will love them too!

Atinuke has also written a new book which looks like it might be a good one for younger boys - here

I remember dd also liked Alexander McCall Smith's children's books at that age (Akimbo & the Elephants was the first one she read, IIRC). Adventure stories set in Africa, I imagine they would appeal to boys as much as girls.

I thought of getting her some of the classics I have the chronicles of narnia here so she can borrow them, I was just needed other suggestions that 6/7 year olds are currently into. Thanks for all the great suggestions :)

Takver you would think that kids would have these but my sister has only read the shopaholic series of books and I think my BIL is the same! I loved books as a kid and can't understand how my other siblings don't have the same passion! DN seems to be taking after me so I think its only right I should encourage it!

My DDs are much younger, 2yo and 7mo but they are showing signs already of loving a good book! :)

Thanks again for tall the great suggestions!
