What are you getting your 9/10 year old boys?

Or to rephrase "what to buy the 9/10 year old who has everything"?!

Really stuck on what to get DS for Xmas. And he won't tell me yet what he would like as it is a secret apparently! I suspect he may be trying to ensure I don't see his letter to Santa to prove his existence one way or the other.

Anyway. He is into football, WWE (yuck), has a PS3, has a DS and we have a family Wii. He would like a table tennis table but although we have room here we won't have when we move next summer. He would like a drum kit and has been having lessons for 3 years but DH is not keen. We have a ton of Lego although I do feel a big challenging set may need to be part of present for me him to do over Xmas.

We have lots of board games. He got 2 of those Lego games last Xmas which have not even been opened. He has lots of unread books.

Has an iPod. Would like a TB for his room but that is NOT happening. Would like a laptop - also not happening!

Just a quick question - my OH has a son from his previous relationship. He is 10 and an only child. I haven't had much experience of boys of that age (although I have known him since he was 7), but I always think he seems very young for his age. He is really into Club Penguin and in particular likes to collect the Puffles. Is this unusual in boys of this age? And if not - what Xmas pressies can we get that are connected/ appropriate? (am also watching this space for inspiration!!)

SantasMooningArse · 03/11/2010 18:41

Ds's just growing out of Cp about now, but if he's into that sort of thing consider the new Lego Universe game (but remember to factor in the monthly fee- works out about £107 for a whole year including software, as you get a month included with game and then pay about £8 a month membership)

have that for ds3 but he ahs ASD and accesses thsoe things as his only play so different for us; a legit DLA expense IMO, often only communication he will make.

Furball · 03/11/2010 18:51

travispickles

hows about a hooded top? or tee shirt?

there is also a joke book for about £5

has he a Nintendo ds? as there are a couple of CP games for that

stillconfused · 03/11/2010 19:06

Have made lots of notes for my own DS's - same dilemma here. DS1 wants a mobile phone (he will be 11 in April). Previous presents / ideas: inline skates / rollerblades, football magazine subscription, Meccano.

Curiousmama · 03/11/2010 21:18

What are cp games?

I've only got a couple of things for ds2 at the moment, he's just gone 10. Got him Rush hour trilogy because he saw half of first one somewhere and loved it. Also a big inflatable transparent globe because he saw one on 'I'm not smarter than a 10 year old' and loved it. He's really into geography too.

Some good ideas on here though. Ds2 isn't really into games he plays mostly with little figures. Obsessed with footy though.

Furball · 03/11/2010 21:24

club penquin

Curiousmama · 03/11/2010 21:25

thanks, ds1 used to be into that I should've known Blush

Have you seen bananagrams? I was looking for something else on amazon and came across it, looks good.

foxinsocks · 03/11/2010 22:08

ds (9) still very fond of his puffle hoodie though he doesn't go on club penguin that much now (though the subscription ended and I forgot to renew it!)

Ds is getting Fifa 11 on the nintendo ds for his birthday (in November). May possibly get him one more game for Christmas though he loves pokemon and there aren't any new ones (think he got Pokemon Gold earlier).

He also would like the Guiness Book of World Records and the new Wimpy Kid book.

New premiership football or the england football (I quite liked that one, had the england flag on it). We will probably take him to a game for Christmas too.

Clothes
Michelle Paver "wolf Brother"series of books v popular with DS and his friends (10/11 years)
DS games: HP lego, Star Wars,
Basketball hoop & basketball
Tech Deck
Skateboard (together with helmet and elbow/knee guards)

BudaisintheZONE · 04/11/2010 07:10

Herecomesthesciencebint - like the sound of those lego shaped boxes - which thread was it on?

Curiousmama - Bananagrams looks good. Will bear in mind.

Thanks everyone else! Have lots of ideas now. And put a call out on Facebook looking for a source of good quality football tables here in Budapest and one of the teaching assistants at DS's school linked a Hungarian website that does them. May need her help in ordering as my Hungarian is crap but at least I can get one if we decide to do that.

Now just have to wait for his letter to Santa and see what he actually wants!

Hope others have found this thread useful! I love MN!

Buda doesn't amazon deliver to Budapest?

BudaisintheZONE · 04/11/2010 10:44

Curiousmama - they do but only certain items. Books, DVDs etc all ok but anything bigger then quite often no. For instance they won't deliver Uno Extreme.

I was going to suggest a games table too - that is what my 9 yr old has his eye on. Tesco were doing a 4-in-1 one reduced to £40 a few weeks ago & am kicking myself I didn't get it then but was worried how I would hide it until Christmas....

He also wants the new Prof Layton game for his DS.

Whoever asked about Club Penguin - my 9 yr old still plays on it a bit and likes all cuddly toys still not just CP ones (but would not admit that to his friends!)

We went to a zoo at half term and he got yet another one...

Curiousmama · 04/11/2010 11:39

That's a shame.

NordicPrincess · 04/11/2010 11:46

Why dont you but him one of those electronic drum sets here they use head phones for the sound? if thats too pricey speak to your local music shop about hiring them.

Hes getting older now so maybe it dousnt need to be abou gifts, can you buy him an experience? go ccaring or climbing or a day out with you doing something fun instead?

SantasMooningArse · 04/11/2010 13:09

Did you locate uno extreme? If not i would happily post to you Buda. Order it on Amazon for delivery to me (cat me but expect delay for answer LOL, bridgwaterc arninival weekend) and I'll post on over. After all, you'd know where I lived Wink if I did not.

BudaisintheZONE · 04/11/2010 14:23

SantasMooningArse! Who ARE you? Not Orm as I have seen her around I think?

Anyway - thanks for offer - that is very kind. I have just decided to go home to Dublin for a weekend from 19th. My Dad has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and I just feel I need to see him. He is ok at the moment but I feel a bit far away so figured i could pop home for the weekend and also get in a bit of Xmas shopping.

OP posts:
SantasMooningArse · 04/11/2010 14:54

That sounds sensible.

Orm is scarily close; we knew each other before we 'knew' each other via MN PMSL.
Her DD was in my Rainbow group.
No- Peachy.

BudaisintheZONE · 04/11/2010 16:10

Ah. Now I know! Grin Can't keep up with name changers. Old brain.

Curiousmama · 04/11/2010 20:40

Sorry about your dad hope he'll be ok?

shirazplease · 04/11/2010 21:00

I've had a brain wave for my 9 year old football mad nephew - a subscription to Kick magazine. A kids footy mag.

Hurrah!

BudaisintheZONE · 04/11/2010 21:31

Shirazplease - Match magazine is good too . DS gets that.

Curiousmama - thanks. He gets results of bone scan tomorrow to see if it has spread. Shitting myself tbh. And my mum has vascular dementia and seems to be getting worse. Not a great time.

LunarSea · 05/11/2010 08:13

You can use Tesco Clubcard Rewards tokens for subscriptions to Kick (£7) and Match of the Day (£12.50) magazines, if you've got any of those to use. The value of them goes down on 6th December, so its worth using them now if they're available for things you want - the subscriptions will be £9 and £16.50 once the changes come in. Same for days out tokens, etc - anything which is 4x value now will only be 3x after then. I'm getting lots of people magazine subscriptions this year to use my hoarded vouchers up!

Football accessories go down well with mine - goalkeeper gloves, plain black thin gloves for matches on cold days, compression/thermal shirts/leggings for under kit, etc. Also ds/wii games (or whatever other platform you've got. IPod apps, music downloads. ds1 will probably get an IPod docking station or speakers. Books - some good cheap sets at the Book People.
