How many presents do you get your dc?

Just how many presents is the norm?

Some of these threads list 6/7 different main presents.

ok my dc get a stocking of stuff but small stuff, Hawkins bazaar type jokes and toys and then one present under the tree. Only one present, sometimes it's been very expensive , like a DS, some times it's been a much cheaper game or toy, but just one.

We don't do an amount of presents but we do have a budget. We spend X amount on each DC and that may be one thing or several things. My 2 are old enough not to be miffed if one has more things than the other.

Clary · 25/10/2010 17:51

I usually buy one big thing (which may just be a DS game for £15) and a few bits eg books, a board game, something like 20Q or a small Lego set.

Less this year tho as on tight budget (who isn't!?)

Also stockings but a lot of that is either v v cheap or stuff they need anyway like socks and pants and shower gel.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/10/2010 17:57

A stocking for each of them (some of the items are things like a toothbrush, carton of juice, socks etc) and then a main present, although nothing massive as they are only 4yrs and nearly 2yrs.

They have presents from my parents, MIL, FIL & his wife, Great Nana, 3 sets of uncles plus a couple of childless friends of ours, so I think that they have plenty (and we only have a small house!)

Bingtata · 25/10/2010 22:24

There isn't a norm. It is what you choose for your family and what you can afford.

I get one big present, a few medium presents and a stocking for DD.

LolaLadybird · 26/10/2010 17:27

We have a budget rather than a number of presents and also stockings. For DS (nearly 3), it will be one big present and for DD (5)it will probably be 4 or 5 smaller things as there is not one particular things she wants. DD has never yet commented on who has more (and DS is too young to notice). Also, by the time you factor in pressies from relatives and friends, there is plenty.

There was not very much money when we were growing up and we didn't get stacks of stuff but I still remember Christmas being absolutely magical.

Bing is right - it's about what's right for you (she was just able to say it much more concisely than me Grin).

VivaLeBeaver · 26/10/2010 17:30

I also go on Budget.

This year DD's main present is a Wii game - its what she's asked for, but she's getting quite a few other things round the £10-£15 mark. A set of books, littlest pet shop set, a lego game, earrings, new dressing gown, clothes, then smaller stuff such as some nail polish, some fashion rings. She'll probably get more presents this year but of cheaper value. I'm used to her main present being more expensive such as a wii, a dsi or a bike so will "make up" for that by getting more little stuff.

mapoftheworld · 26/10/2010 17:31

My 2 are still little and want lots of things to open rather than expensive things
They get one big present (in size more than cost, this year its £20 each) and aabout 5 or 5 other things about £5 to £10 each, then a handful of things each from the pound shop to make it look like loads!

DarciesmumandTTC2 · 26/10/2010 17:37

DD gets a stocking and then pressies under the tree no main one as such as i've tried to group them together this yr. Gone over budget but not buying anymore for her now.

This yr DD has got:
Sylvanian Families Primrose Nursery Deluxe set.
Sylvanian Families Primrose Nursery Playground.
Barbie car & 2 Barbies with Accessories.
5 Books
Singstar for PS3
Princess and the Frog & Mulan on Blu ray.
Cheryl Cole Album
Miley Cyrus album
Hannah Montana Album
R4 card for her DSi
and possibly Just Dance 2 for the Wii.
I think thats it, but can't remember.

vespasian · 26/10/2010 17:43

There isn't a norm, dd gets:

A stocking which contains little things usually books from the charity shop, smellies, chocolate and fruit.

A few books I usually get her a set from the book people
a pair of pyjamas to open Christmas eve
a main present which is about £30

FreakoidOrgansandBloodoid · 26/10/2010 17:49

One main present (this year a kiddizoom I think)
Then one or two small things
And a stocking.

1 main present but DS will only be 3.5 months old. My SIL buys her kids half a dozen from her and another few from santa. With all the relations presents they get bored of opening them before they are half way through. Some things never make it out of the box. What a waste of money.

domesticsluttery · 26/10/2010 18:09

It depends!

This year DD (who is 4) has:
Wooden 4x4 and horsebox with horse and vet
Stables jigsaw
2 books (about sheepdogs)
Orchard Toys board game
Sock Monkey
2 Annuals

DS2 (who is 6) has:
Lego
12 x Terry Deary books
Dinosaurs jigsaw
Orchard Toys board game
Sock Monkey
2 Annuals

DS1 (who is 8) has:
Lego
10 x Horrible Histories books
UK map jigsaw
Orchard toys board game
Sock Monkey
2 Annuals

I will also buy some little stocking fillers and chocolate etc, but not much.

Thay also have tickets to see Matilda the musical.

They get presents from family and friends too, so they always end up with silly amounts of presents.

Frrrrightattendant · 26/10/2010 18:55

My parents are getting ds1 a new bike as his is too small, will be kept for ds2.

they are getting ds2 a camera (kiddizoom I think)

I'm getting ds1 a ds game or two, maybe. And a few small stockingy things.

Ds2 is having a couple of smallish things from me, like a transformer and a remote control insect thing (half price)

also a stocking.

Feels like about the right level this year.

lizziemun · 26/10/2010 20:29

I have a rough budget (which I set) and aim to spend within £10/£20 either way. I don't necessary spend the same on each child (6.5yr, 3yr and 18mths).

But then DH will then decide to buy extra.

Oldjolyon · 26/10/2010 23:19

It entirely depends on a number of factors...

*Do you include essentials that you would be buying anyway? This can easily cost £50+ in pyjamas, vests, socks, pants, slippers etc. Either you include this, and this will add to your budget, or you just buy things as and when, which will probably lower your budget.

Also, do you buy gifts for your DC when you go to town? I don't. If I see something I think DDs will like, I'll put it away until Christmas. If I gave them gifts during the year, I'd probably give less at Christmas.

My DDs usually get 5 main presents, but at least one of those will be a an outfit, and at least half of their stockings will be practical, so I think that influences things.

frazzled74 · 26/10/2010 23:28

1 main , about 3-5 large but inexpensive presents and lots of little novelty/£shop type pressies. I wrap up socks, pants, pjs etc that i would have to buy anyway. I only buy toys for birthday and christmas. I have in the past bought lots on credit but dont anymore. I have just ebayed some outgrown toys and clothes and made £100. This will be used for pressies, am hoping to find some bargain lego.

LaDiDevilDiDie · 26/10/2010 23:37

Last year we spent loads on dd and she got a baby brother too!

This year I'm going to try to cut down as at 4 I think she will remember for last year and I don't want to set a standard that we can;t maintain!
Having said that I don't buy toys apart from birthday and Xmas (though dd can get books at other times) and I do buy and wrap PJs etc.

Marne · 27/10/2010 09:23

Last year they got way too many, this year (so far)

dd2:
Small drum kit
Strawberry shortcake cafe (playset)
Magnetic doll dress up thing.
Peppa pig snow boots.

dd1:
A chatimal
A book

I need to get dd1 something else and they will also get a stocking. I stilll need to find a few more bits but havn't got a clue what to get them.
