Think I have bought a stupid (pricey) present in a moment of panic - what to do?

I know this sounds completely idiotic and like I haven't anything better to worry about (which believe me I actually do!) but I decided to buy a joint present for the dds (9 & 5 yo) from me and dh and then was planning on stocking fillers from santa.

They both love Harry Potter. and they've just started playing with Lego.

...and so I bought the latest harry potter lego castle for £100.

and now I think it might be a big mistake. I've never bought kids' presents that cost that much. They don't do computer games so we don't have a console, and I was thinking we'd spend £50 each on them for their main present. But now it looks a bit 'specialist' and something boys might like more. I'm thinking they prefer lego that can be changed.

I am having lots of problems being decisive about this, which I know is completely pathetic (in my defence it's a common problem for me at the moment; i'm under a lot of stress and I've recently lost the confidence to make decisions).

I think maybe they'd prefer smaller presents that are for each of them. The box of harry potter lego is complete and perfect; was only delivered a few weeks ago - could I sell it on if I do decide to change it? does lego keep its value? Confused

I think it's a brilliant present and that they will love it. Girls like something like HP Lego more than boys, I find, not least because girls are more into role play usually.
But wait until mid-November, and if it still feels wrong, bung it on Ebay.

Katisha · 25/10/2010 11:25

Keep it. They will love it. It's not a boy thing.
As far as "lego that can be changed" is concerned, in this house once the original model has been made, that's what it turns into. We have a crate full of old star wars lego stuff - the original model has never been built again, but numerous small vehicles/houses/figures have emerged from the star wars/lego city/ harry potter rubble!

Thanks. They were actually talking about HP lego today and my ears pricked up...Smile

Just seems quite expensive but I spose between them it's not so bad. And they do like role play things. We'll just have to think about moving house now to accommodate it all Hmm!

I think that is a lovely present. This year, I have got for the 1st time 2 boxes of lego sets - both the 3 in 1 creator house in total £87.

I am planning to get more lego as they have 2 crates of duplo but as they will be 7 and 9 soon, I wanted them to get into building lego sets and reading instructions.

I want to the Lego shop yesterday and wanted to get 2 sets, the greengrocer for £100 and the grand emporium for £140. As I was looking at these, my daughter said that they wanted more lego to build their imaginary items rather then sets so yesterday evening in th moment of madness, I put in and won a 16KG box of lego (2 massive crates ) for £200.

Not sure if I regret it but will wait and see what exactly is in those boxes. Whatever I do not want, I will ebay it and get something back and if need extras, I can buy separate bricks from ebay or lego shop and also can download instructions off lego website or buy a cd from ebay.

Hopefully they will get into it and when they get bored in a few years time, I will sell it back on Ebay.

I think you have done the right thing. They may get hooked and want more sets later.

I bought the HP Castle as a 'family' present with the remains of a bonus.. DS (nearly) 7 helped to build the castle - we did it slowly, stretched the build over a couple of days DD (almost 5) got to build all of the minifigs and was designated 'part finder' for the rest of us... as a finished product it is bloody lovely.. we've un-assembled it now and we're going to re-build over the christmas half term on the run up to christmas if you can get hold of something to (safely) light the main hall in the evenings the 'stained glass' looks very pretty. They both loved playing with it when built and because there's a few minifigs younger DD is happy! I'd be surprised if they were disappointed, watch a couple of HP films before they open it.....

feel ought to add the disclaimer, I love LEGO always have.. probably at 38 should stop buying it (for myself) but I figure it's cheaper than therapy. Could not be described as someone to give sensible advice on LEGO purchases. Quite like Harry Potter too, so combine the two and I'd quite happily empty my savings into the LEGO coffers.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/10/2010 08:09

I think it sounds a fab present!

My brothers and I loved Lego growing up, we would plan who would ask for what for Christmas and birthdays so that we could complete certain sets etc

In terms of cost per hour of play I think it is one of the best things you can buy for kids - DS is only 2 but he is a keen Duplo-er already :)

Thanks again. Am convinced!

Told the dds no tv after tea last night and they spent 1 and a half hours with their existing lego box in the dining room both absolutely absorbed. I guess it's just the price that made me Confused

Now all I've got to do is find some very cheap tat for their stockings!

I totally agree with the others that if you DO change your mind in November/ December you WILL get your money back on ebay- its looking to be one the hot toys this year

I am not a big fan of the sets, but that does look lovely. Lego rocks

LolaLadybird · 26/10/2010 17:17

:) at Lego being cheaper than therapy.

LolaLadybird · 26/10/2010 17:20

OMG - have just looked at the HP castle on Amazon and it looks amazing. DD and DS are a bit young but I want one!
