Can't help with the 6 yr old but for a 2yr old I would recomend:

Teaset
Toy kitchen with pots and pans
Velcro food
Duplo

My almost three yr old plays with these over and over again

DD1 will be 6 just before Christmas and will be given a Sylvanian Families 'starter home' by us and the caravan by Grandparents. FC has been asked for the car. She's also going to be given a few of the SF figures (she's just started wanting to collect/play with them), a highchair for her teddy, the Puffin stories for 6-year-olds CD, Milly Molly Mandy book, Roald Dahl books and the Pippi Longstocking book illustrated by Lauren Child.

Hairclips, blutak, gel pens and doodle books are also popular gifts for her and her friends at the moment. Lego and Playmobil are other ideas, DD1 would be given Lego if not for the recent obsession with SF.

For the 2-year-old how about a Mini Micro scooter (older one could be given a Maxi Micro!), balance bike, Aquadoodle or perhaps Happyland sets?

We are getting our two year old a table and chairs set and she is also getting (from rellies) a toy vaccuum, duplo, a horsey stick, and a balance bike.

My 2 yr old is getting playmobil.

SE13Mummy, I wanted to get my 2yr old a scooter for her birthday- which one would be suitable?

WallowsInFlies · 24/10/2010 10:22

the only truly decent thing i have bought in the last year was a puky bike. think they do scooters too.

fantastically made stuff.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 24/10/2010 10:57

TethHearseEnd - my 2 year old has this scooter which is great for toddlers. Pricey, but worth it imo. I think I found a 20% off voucher for Jojomamanbebe which cut the price down.

For Christmas he's getting a wooden kitchen and various bits and pieces to go with it, some accessories to go with his wooden train set, an orchard toy game and mr potato head. My parents are getting him a wooden easel, which I think he'll really like.

Can't really help with the 6 year old I'm afraid - although I have bought some six year olds quite cute bags and cold weather accessories for Christmas from Accessorize.

We got this for my DS a few years ago, it started out as a 4 wheeler then to a 3 wheeler and is now a 2 wheeler but he has huge feet and is now 4 and a half so we have decided to pass it on to a friend who's son is nearly 2. So it will be converted back to it's old 4 wheeled self.

It's stood up to a lot of bashing, crashing and falling off but it's still in fine nick.

It's lasted well and is not half as bulky or expensive as a micro scooter.

TethHearseEnd · 24/10/2010 11:40

Thank you domestic- I should say that she is not 2 until November; do you think she will be too young for it? She is average sized, although quite tall...

ZombiePandaEatsEis · 24/10/2010 11:59

Hey BigLips!! Tis Ei!

We are getting DD a portable DVD player and some disney DVDs, a princess oven set, playdough icecream factory and some little things like colouring book crayons/felt tips barbie clothes etc

Have you asked DD1 if there is anythin she wants santa to bring her? She might have some ideas??

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 24/10/2010 12:06

TethHearseEnd - my DS got it for his 2nd birthday (he's quite small) and was fine on it straight away. I've got a few friends with older children who still play with theirs so good long term play value. I know it says from 3 years, but I've found it to be absolutely fine from 2 years. Have a look at the manufacturer's website here they actually say that although it's aged from 3 years, they believe any toddler who is walking will take to it easily.

I actually bought it after reading lots of rave reviews on here. It is pricey, but I have to disagree with mamadiva - I don't find it bulky at all. It sits in my (very narrow) hallway usually and I don't even notice it. It's quite light and compact. I like that it only has one wheel at the back - DS can't catch his heel when he's scooting about.

bartonian · 24/10/2010 12:06

Both my DS(5) and DD(3) have been riding their mini micro scooters from 18 months and both mastered them really quickly. They are expensive but completely worth it, I would not have survived without them as they get ridden to school/park/playground and we get there faster than walking and with a lot less moaning! They also get an immense amount of pleasure out of riding them, especially down slopes in the park where they really get some speed up (terrifies my mum though, she can't watch!).

WallowsInFlies · 24/10/2010 12:38

here

can highly recommend these. got my ds one for his third birthday but he was using a friends one on holiday when he was two and handling it. they're soon flying around and the joy is you get to walk at a decent speed again =)

SE13Mummy · 25/10/2010 00:06

The scooter I'd recommend is this one. Apart from the major advantage of being easy to balance on it is also quiet so you don't feel as though you are walking along the street with a rattly, squeaky thing.
