Stocking fillers for an older lady

lilolilmanchester · 02/10/2010 22:03

We all still have stockings. I need to get my Mum's stocking ready asap as she isn't spending Christmas here and someone's "passing by" this way who can drop it off at my brother's in a couple of weeks Having filled her stocking for so many years, I am all out of ideas. We tend to go for mainly practical but sometimes funny things. Any thoughts?
Couldn't possibly list all the things I've put in in the past, but here are some off the top of my head:
Nail varnish/eyemakeup remover pads; tights; gloves; notelets; books of stamps; nail varnish; moisturiser; lottery ticket; puzzle books; novels; noteblocks; pens; handcream; candles; serviettes etc etc

nice piece of jewellery? bubble bath?

Does she have any hobbies that you could put something related to in the stocking?

small new purse?
gloves?

lilolilmanchester · 02/10/2010 22:11

Hi lucy's mam. Jewellery - yup, good suggestion. Purse - would see that more as a main present than a stocking filler but have given her a "coin" purse for travelling in the past. Should have said, she refuses to use bubble bath/shower gel/body lotion - sometimes put soap in. Also forgot to say she does like arty-crafty things but have put card-making/scrapbooking things in her stockings too many times to want to do it again. Oh, and she can't have anything sugary. And doesn't drink alcohol.

packs of pretty tissues.
Chocolate e.g. luxury bars of thorntons chocolate, mini box of roses.
Mini bottle of wine/champagne
bedsocks
boots gift card
lipgloss/lipstick
facepack sachet.
miniatures of shampoo/conditioner/bubble bath
small photo album
keyring

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 22:15

hmmmm, new make up bag?

phone top up voucher if she's on PAYG, you get 12 months to use them up. Phone case if she's not. Not necessarily something fancy, mines from our local quid shop & I don't even think it's meant for a phone tbh but it stops the screen getting scratched.

Diabetic chocs if she can't have anything sugary?

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 22:16

DrNortherner · 02/10/2010 22:16

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 22:20

DrNortherner, I have one of those glass nail files from Wilko & I love it! Only thing with those is you need to remember not to use it if it gets chipped

Onlyaphase · 02/10/2010 22:21

My MIL gets some of the following

small jar home made jam/marmalade/chutney
iTunes voucher
DVDs
tiny photoframe
magnetic photoframe for fridge
amusing fridge magnet
pocket diary
seeds - maybe get a paint your own flowerpot and add some seeds?
lottery scratchcards

usually top the stocking with current relevant magazines, not so good when you're doing this in advance. Maybe a wall calendar instead?

lilolilmanchester · 02/10/2010 22:21

thanks onepiece - choc/booze out, tissues are a regular & she doesn't like toiletries apart from her regular soap. BUT haven't ever done bedsocks and a great idea ( where would I get them from?) It's a while since I got her a lipstick (or could put in a Boots card so she can get her own). Quite often put tissues in. Have remembered, I've got one of those trolley coins somewhere which I got for her. and a bookmark.

Pants (everyone has to have a new pair of pants in their stocking!)
Facecloth
New toothbrush/toothpaste
Magazine (fills up the space nicely)
Candles
Packs of favourite snacks (my mum loves dried mango, dp gets licquorice)

lilolilmanchester · 02/10/2010 22:26

oh gosh, loads of suggestions here - thanks everyone. Having been doing her stockings for so long, have done most things - honestly!

But am getting quite a list:

  • jewellery
  • lipstick and/or Boots voucher
  • lottery scratch card
  • bedsocks
  • trolley token
  • phone case
  • glass nail file
  • headache stick thingie
  • seeds

(BTW, all the diabetes medical information says not to bother with the so called diabetic chocolate/sweets etc....)

bedsocks - Bhs often have a selection (or M&S/JL/Debenhams)

does she use hairspray/products. Boots have a massive selection of miniature/trial sizes.

mini photo frame?

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 22:31

ChequeredFlag, what's a fortune telling fish?

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 22:32

does she smoke? My dp is getting a new lighter & pack of ten fags in his. Not very pc but he's a baccy smoker & occasionally treats himself to ten fags

lilolilmanchester · 02/10/2010 22:32

If I don't add your suggestions to my list, please don't be offended - it just means they've been done to death in the past!

jewellery

  • lipstick and/or Boots voucher
  • lottery scratch card
  • bedsocks
  • trolley token
  • phone case
  • glass nail file

Lucysmam - little red very thin sheets of some kind of plastic in a fish shape, that you hold in your hand and the different ways that they curl 'tells your fortune' - available at those ethnic kind of gift shops that sell things like incense and decorated chopsticks! Cost about 10p each and are mildly amusing for a few minutes when everyone has a go.

ChequeredFlag · 02/10/2010 22:43

What's a brag book?

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 22:44

ooh, they sound fun. Don't think there's anywhere that sells that kind of thing round here. Will have a look see if I can find some online

Cheers ChequeredFlag
