What happens to the guarantee on goods that are bought in September but only opened at Christmas?

I want to get a head start on the Christmas shopping, however, I'm a little worried as to how the guarantee (warranty?) works on goods that are bought at this time of year, with a 28 day return policy, but only opened at Christmas?

Does anyone know how this works?

A 28 day return policy might be a shop's policy but you are entitled in law to return goods up to (I think) 2 years. I would check but my books are downstairs and I am not...

You might be setting yourself up for some aggro though if you try this. Returning goods outside of a shop's stated limit is a kind of recreation for lawyers and others of that kidney.

However a lot of shops waive the rules just after Christmas.

I bought DS's present in ELC last week as I had a 20% off voucher and the assistant just wrote 'christmas' on the receipt for me.

She was most helpful!

most shops won't take it back if it is just unwanted, if something is faulty and you have proof of purchase they have to take things back. Keep your receipts!

Thanks all!

I'm going to go ahead and buy (and keep the receipts) Smile
