stocking fillers

what do you all put into your kids stockings? i know what i get, but am looking for inspiration for something different. (stockings are not huge, not wide enough for dvd's etc, and probably long enough to be almost knee high on an adult)

Great minds think alike - I've just been jotting down notes for stocking fillers. Grin

How about a wind up novelty torch - you can get them shaped like penguins and the like. A comic - can be rolled into a tube.

I'm going to go through old threads in this topic for inspiration and will come back and post if I see something good.

Hawkins Bazaar is a total lifesaver for stockings. Small fun things that are cheap! Has an online shop too.

cherrymonster · 11/09/2010 19:31

i normally use hawkins bazaar for stocking fillers. they normally get a variety of crap from there, along with rubbers, pencils, socks, pants, sweets and choc coins, tin of lynx for ds1 and usually a small teddy in the top. but this year i want to do something different

My rule is that stocking fillers must cost less than a pound per item. I hate magazines spreads near Christmas that are pictures of small ietms called 'stocking fillers' all costing at least £10. in our family £10 is a big present as there are lots of us and our limit is £5 per person (excepting our own children). I also do toothbrushes, toothpaste, nice deodorant etc for older kids as stocking fillers

cherrymonster · 11/09/2010 21:01

i dont set a limit on the stocking fillers, but to be fair they are all usually under £3. i also do a new toothbrush for each of them, but as they all use the same toothpaste i dont bother with that.

Keyrings.
Compact flannels that expand when they hit the water (£1.50 in Tesco).

What age are your children?

I love buying stocking fillers but do tend to spent a bit more per item as hate plastic tat all over the place!

cherrymonster · 11/09/2010 23:26

ds's are 11 and 9, dd's are 5 and 4.

thisiswhataluv · 12/09/2010 18:33

4-5 year old

snap cards from elc
hairclips/bobbles
jewellery
personalised keyring to go on schoolbag
stationary/mini notebook & pens

11 year old

might beanz
cds
mini wheres wally books?
vouchers
stationary

OhCobblers · 12/09/2010 21:31

small umbrella for the girls.
play watch.
toy model animals (like Schleich but cheaper!)

cherrymonster · 12/09/2010 22:29

all very good ideas. girls have umbrellas already cobblers.

thisis- i always put pencils, rubbers etc in, dont fancy the idea of vouchers for ds1, he still believes in father christmas and vouchers dont really fit the idea, santa would know what he wants, not give him vouchers to choose things himself

Uno is an excellent stocking filler but at £5 maybe a bit pricey but it's not tat.

Separated out according to age appropriateness, Roald Dahl Collection

One of those individual variety cereal boxes, full of sugary evil

DinahRod · 12/09/2010 22:56

uno
rubik's cube
top trumps
domino set

Sinkingfeeling · 12/09/2010 22:58

I have 3 DD (7, 7, 5) and do:

Orange
Chocolate coins
(cos it's traditional, innit?)
socks/pants in latest 'thing' (HSM, Hello Kitty - don't buy them at any other time of the year)
Flashing toothbrush
Small notebook and pens
Stickers
Hair accessories
Flavoured lip balm
Small toy/bouncy ball/mini puzzle
Keyring

... and I'm probably mad but I wrap them up in tissue paper because it takes them longer to open them that way

zipzap · 12/09/2010 23:05

Beware the novelty torches - make sure you choose one that can hold it's charge and not one that you need to keep pumping to keep the light going as your hand will fall off fairly rapidly...

Could you get a xmas special comic and roll it up - they often have small toys on that you can wrap separately and pop in the stocking, plus it will give them something to look at if they wake up really early.

If they like crafty stuff, watch out in tesco's if you go there, they sometimes have packs full of really annoying bits craft supplies beloved by ds1 that are usually more expensive but good when you can get them for a pound. In fact keep your eyes on those bargain displays as they often throw up a few weird and wonderful things for stockings or xmas presents.

keep an eye on bananas.co.uk for cheap books - it is the bargain basement site for thebookpeople.co.uk and redhouse.co.uk selling off ends of lines, and they are already pretty cheap (doing urls from memory, they might be .com rather than .co.uk)

stickers often go down well - whsmith have some on offer at the moment in their back to school bit (including some that have about 7 sheets for a couple of pounds instead of £7.

little boys if they are anything like mine seem to love cars - you can get cheap cars or a cheap set of cars that you can split up from supermarkets. Sainsburys had some the other day that was £1.05 for 5 cars (albeit reduced) - crazy price but great for stocking fillers or keeping one in your handbag and the car that you are not too bothered about them getting broken. If your ds is older, needs to be given along with a tablet of miracle grow/ baby bio so it will grow bigger for them Grin

Speaking of sainsburys, the last couple of years they have had half price toy weeks, last year it was in half term week Hmm (bit tricky to sneak buy santa stuff in shop when kids are constantly there!) which is great, especially for picking up the little sets of lego and playmobile that are usually £4-8 whcih seem really good value when you get them for £2-4.

Packet of seeds if you have a garden and they might be encouraged to grow something.

small musical instrument/noise maker if they are still little - hand bells, maracas, clipcloppers, little harmonica.

Pick up things like tennis balls or outdoor stuff on the sale now ready, most kids like to have a ball to chase around... In fact keep your eyes out in the sales now for things like mini craft kits and pens etc as well

slinky springs are always fun.

keep an eye on the pocketmoney toy section in supermarkets too.

fun set of socks and set of pants/vests that you would have bought anyway can be added, with bonus that they have nice new set to wear on xmas day.

bottle of bubble bath.

plastic cup/beaker with cheapest their favourite character on, again some going cheap after the summer - has advantage of taking up quite a bit of space. can put small pack of raisins / choc /etc in if you feel it takes up too much space. Or new sports bottle for taking drink to school if old one getting old/useful to have a spare

spare card for digital camera - prices are plummeting

ditto - memory stick for those a bit older

keep an eye out for promotions on places like play.com and thegadgetshop.com (they've already started, with xmas countdowns and warehouse clearouts...) - as well as places like tkmaxx on the high street.

Finally - work out what you are going to put in the stocking approximately - I have little boys so currently try to do satsuma, gold choc coins, pants/socks/vest, toothbrush, plastic beaker/sports bottle, little car or two, some sort of little character or man, plastic animal, fluffy toy to poke head out of the top, set of crayons or pens, something musical and something to read. Keep a list in diary (they can't read yet so don't have to worry about keeping it in code!) and then can tick off as I get them. If I spot something else that's a great buy then fine, it's not a fixed list, but I don't want to discover the week before christmas that I have got 43 bargain toy cars and no crayons for example.

Also be prepared to start buying things now. Find a place to hide things and add to it as you buy them, write down where it is (again you don't want to get to xmas eve and discover that you have lost all your stocking fillers when you come to pack them at 1.45am)

zipzap · 12/09/2010 23:06

oops. have been obsessing thinking about this too much Blush

uno etc were in last year's half price sale on all toys at sainsburys - might be worth waiting to get those to see if they do it again?

zipzap · 12/09/2010 23:12

If you're near a lego shop they do a little bag near the till that makes up a lego frog for £1.

It's their charity thing instead of pins or little bags of sweets - but fab as a stocking filler or extra little present for kids that like lego...

cherrymonster · 13/09/2010 09:59

some very good ideas here.

zipzap- am not near a lego shop which is a big shame as all of my kids love lego. wonder if they do them in the online shop. i have started buying things already, have a few bits of tat from hawkins, and am keeping an eye out whenever i go into any shops.

thisiswhataluv · 13/09/2010 10:14

last year we did this and got 10-12 little bags of lego sets for ds... great to fill his stocking Smile
