my 8 year old dd has just had Harumika fashion doll for her birthday which she Loves if your niece likes clothes (and i think most do what with hannah montana influence of last few years.) she also got nail art kit which she can't do herself but loves having done.

my 6 yr old dd really wants those little hamster things - zhu zhu pets (and 8 6 and 3 year old wants those too!) and everyone seems to rave about them but not seen any myself yet.

failing that i find that really trashy coloured make up and very messy craft things always keep them happy if not me!

This is a ridiculous question.

Spend some time with them and find out yourself.

pantaloons · 03/09/2010 22:39

Not sure about 8 year olds, but my nearly 7 year old is make up and jewelery mad. I am going to get her some nice beads and jewelery making kit for Christmas. I think the younger girl may also like this or like jenhden said some craft stuff. Last year I made a craft bag up and put lots of stickers, pink pritt stick etc in. Poundland is a good source for cheap craft stuff.

OhCobblers · 03/09/2010 23:18

er Merle the reason for the question is that due to geography i'm lucky if i see them twice a year.

the clue might have been in my first posting saying that "i don't see them very often" but thanks for your helpful post.

Jenhden & Pantaloons - thanks for your suggestions - i'll look into those.

My 2 girls are 6.8 and 8.8yrs old and they are really into arts and craft.

They still enjoy the following and plays with these most of the time.

Magnetixs, K'nex building stuff, Moonsand, Playdough, Hot Wire (building electrical items etc), sometimes even plays with their Happyland (I have 2 boxes so they can build a town etc, they still play with their duplo lego (2 boxes of those too), Polly Pocket, Ice Hocket table, lots of boxes of games and have recently in the summer been playing with Giggle Wiggle, Pirahna Panic, Pictureka, Jenga, HSM DanceMat, Monoploy, Battleships, Blopen and lots more others.

As the ages are quite close, they do play a lot together and still also do lots of crafting together like painting moulds of princess, mermaids, teddybears.

I have started their christmas shopping and I have got them the following: 2 boxes of lego (the smaller size) family house and apple house as I think its good for them to learn to read the instructions to build, 2 boxes of K'nex - the amusement series - again more building and learning stuff, the 8 year old wants to learn to knit so have bought the Fun with wool set - John Adams and they both have asked for the Wammy, the 6 year old has asked for more moulds so will get the Hello Kitty Rotator. With the moulds, I get lots of different types and also will get more plaster from Baker Ross so when they have used up all the plaster that came in the boxes, I just make up more moulds so they and their friends can paint them.

As they have a lot of toys already, have decided to buy more learning stuff rather than playing stuff.

Sorry its long, hope there are a few ideas out there.

Of course, there is also the DS and Wii for them to play with if they don't want to play together.

My DD is 8yo. She likes Sylvanian Families, craft items, photography, music, zhu xhu pets, silly bandz, science kits, books, etc. She has also mentioned, for Christmas, things like meccanno, woodwork kit, things for climbing and a charm bracelet. She loves all thing related to meerkats.

Also hair accessories, vanity sets, nail polish, funky PJs or nighties, Disney, etc.

Hulababy · 04/09/2010 09:19

Merle - the OP has not asked a ridiculous question, your statement is quite odd really. Surely you realise that many factors mean that you can't always know younger members of the family very well - geography oftn being a major one Hmm

amidaiwish · 04/09/2010 09:23

i have a 4.11 and a 6.6 year old
4.11 year old is into sylvanian families and anything hello kitty. she wants zhu zhu pets for her birthday
6.6 year old is into club penguin - lots of merchandise available, space (e.g solar systems) and the DS/Wii (she is quite mature and not very girly). she does however like polly pocket stuff.
if they have one near them, a build a bear voucher is good for both - but need at least £25 each.

I like making up 'kits' for children...

A nice basket with some pretty wool and knitting needles (download simple knitting instructions too!)...

A storage box full of office items is always a winner- things like double sided tape, string, post-its, hole punches, etc. Also, things they might not have seen before like receipt books with carbon paper in...

A baking tin or silicone cake mould or a baking bowl with wooden spoons, rolling pin, sugar-shaker...

Another baking bowl with pretty bun cases, sugar sprinkles, choc drops, smarties, etc and a bun recipe...

Hair kit: shampoo/conditioner for their hair type/colour (or just a lovely smelling one) with a micro-fibre hair towel, good brush, scrunchies, slides, etc...

Nail kit: pretty emery boards, nail varnishes, conditioning cream...

Oooh, I could go on! Grin

Merle · 04/09/2010 11:48

But the fact that it's so vague is what makes it ridiculous. It might have well have asked 'what are children between the ages of 4 and 9 into?' The answer to this question is 'many things, depends on the child'. Without any further information she might have well looked in a toy catalogue/shop and she'd have the answer.

OhCobblers · 04/09/2010 19:26

merle i've actually found the ideas that many other posters have given very helpful so they clearly don't think i'm being too vague.
there are many toys to choose from in a catalogue/shop but at least the responses i've been given narrows it down somewhat.

to all the posters who've given their ideas, thank you! its really helped.

Hulababy

Just out of interest, if your daughter is into Meerkats, you may be interested in
CHATIMAL. If you look this up in Amazon, Play.com or Hawkins Bazaar, you can buy it from there.

Its basically a toy fur animal and if you press their hand, a light comes on and you just say a phase or sentence and they will copy what you say in a funny high or very low voice.

This animal comes in either a hamster in 3 colours or a Meerkat. Play.com costs 16.99 with free delivery whilst Hawkins is £20 and Amazon is £30. You can see the video of this working in Hawkins Bazaar website.

I have just received my one as it only came out a couple of days ago and I thinks its really cute and fun for the kids.

twolittledarlings - oh my goodness; she would adore that!!! I have added it to my favourites ready for Christmas. We have been to see meerkats today at a nearby wildlife park and she bought yet abother soft toy meerkat with her piocket money. She does love them!
