Hello, OP. We hope you don't mind but we've moved your thread here to the Philosophy/religion board as we thought it would be a better fit here (we're assuming you posted it on the Exercise board by mistake).

I think about God often and yet find the Church just so out of touch. And I don't mean mean wokery. I mean traditional values.

Hi OP, most parishes I know of often do coffees after mass and other social events. You can be as involved or uninvolved in the social side as you wish.
Have you tried changing parish? It might help you meet others. All the best.

Ipsevenenabibas · 11/01/2026 21:37

Hi @Holymess does your church have coffee meetings after mass? Have you been going to church for long?

@KimMumsnet perhaps Christian mumsnetters would be a better place for this thread?

@Holymess gosh I am sorry to hear of your health problems. I am going to sleep now - will say a prayer for you. Perhaps if you could give an idea of where you are someone might be near by?

Is there not a group after mass? Where I am and where family are (far and wide) this is very much a thing

Holymess · 14/01/2026 17:37

There are groups but there at 7.30pm I live over an hour away on my own have stage four cancer, asked the church if they would put a note in news letter seeing if any other parishioners are alone and would like to come over for coffee I've asked for three years got no reply, so I'm on my own

Is there really no RC church nearer?

Troubledwords · 18/01/2026 20:47

People might feel uncomfortable going to someone's house that they don't know.

Do you have the Eucharist brought to you? If so then next time the priest or Eucharistic minister comes over I'd mention it to them.

Justmerach · 19/01/2026 07:45

Holyness you say you are Catholic, I was baptised Catholic to and attended a Catholic school to 19. I have been confirmed and received in the church. I am a non demontional Christian now and don’t disagree with Catholism, but I just am non demontional. I can attend any church that aligns with the true meaning of the Bible and fits my needs.

I want to say that I attend an Anglican church today and still at times attend my Catholic primary school church as it has good memories for me. I can take the Eucharist in both church’s. I find the service quite similar to the Catholic service, but they just mention the King in the prayer-but it is not critical to adhere to this. The main thing is the worship. May be there might be an Anglican church nearer you could attend in the week or weekend for the Eucharist and get to more often. I have had healing given in my Anglican church without asking.

You can also get healing and wholeness services in some church’s and my Anglican church does this once a month and I receive holy oils to help manage my autism and life. They bless Holy water for me to which has been very helpful in my life. Holy water is usually already blessed to and free to take home at Catholic church's. . I have had a lot of help and support and the rectors are good holy woman with strong roots in the community and a credit.

We all have a path and God’s will and timing in our life, if you wanted may be it be useful to try being anointed with Holy Oils as you are ill. Jesus asks the elders of the church to anoint those who are sick with Holy Oils. I cannot promise anything, but it might be a worth try if you haven't as your destiny is known by God alone, who has a plan for you and loves you to.

They have coffee meets on a Wednesday after service at 11am and they also have a coffee meet after the Sunday service and some other things here and there.

The elders in church were instructed to pray over and anoint those who were sick and unwell with oil and if they had sinned they would be forgiven (James 5-14-15). There is a difference here between being unwell and in a managed condition. They also used the laying of hands (Luke 13:13). I will share my story to how I got healing from the Eucharist. It was God’s will for my life.

I forgot to add as well, that the Holy Spirit has been present in all the different church's I have attended to in my life. I have happened to have gone to good church's run by good ministers.

Troubledwords · 19/01/2026 09:50

@Justmerach while you may decide to take the Eucharist elsewhere, as a Catholic you should not receive from other non Catholic churches. But that's not the topic of this thread.

@Holymess do you know if the parish closest to you has an St Vincent de Paul group? They would be a good group to contact if so.

Justmerach · 19/01/2026 12:17

I didn’t know that the Canon had this rule and I think they should be more flexible myself. I have had the Eucharist in three Catholic church’s in 2024-2025. Once in Aylesbury on a day retreat in the priory and then in two Catholic church’s that I went to in my childhood, I went last year in October or November 2025 so still with the one year scope. I have felt the Holy Spirit in both Anglican and Catholic church’s. I have conditions myself and it was grave at that point to when I had the healing so it was needed and it was about healing which is within Christ’s law of the spirit over the letter of the law.

Also, the Canon does say that you can receive the Eucharist in other church’s if you are very unwell. I only mentioned it as it seemed difficul for Holyness to get to church and if a local church say Anglican nearby might make it easier.

See the rule below-

Can. 844 §1 Catholic ministers may lawfully administer the sacraments only to Catholic members of Christ’s faithful, who equally may lawfully receive them only from Catholic ministers, except as provided in §§2, 3 and 4 of this canon and in can. 861 §2.

§2 Whenever necessity requires or a genuine spiritual advantage commends it, and provided the danger of error or indifferentism is avoided, Christ’s faithful for whom it is physically or morally impossible to approach a Catholic minister, may lawfully receive the sacraments of penance, the Eucharist and anointing of the sick from non-Catholic ministers in whose Churches these sacraments are valid.

I travel an hour away for Mass most Sundays, and I'm sorry but I wouldn't travel that to visit someone I don't know for a coffee. However you should be able to get the Eucharist brought to you, should you desire it. Have you contacted the priest who does the hospital chaplaincy?

The church I go to is actually in a different diocese to where I live, is that a factor for you?

Holymess · 23/01/2026 05:56

I might do that go to Anglican church forget Catholic the Anglicans seem nicer
