What Christian/theology books are you reading? Other than The Bible.

I'm currently reading Introduction to the devout life by St Francis de Sales

Ooh I hope that goes well for you. Personally I found the Ramsay book terribly dated (published pre female ordination). Everyone gets recommended to read Stephen Cottrell's book and it's perfectly fine. But the most helpful book for me was Graham Tomlin's "The Widening Circle" . It really helped me figure out my understanding of priesthood in a low church evangelical tradition.

Most of my reading at the moment is for my college, course which this term is on Christian leadership. I'm on "In the Name of Jesus" by Henri Nouwen right now. It's his reflections on leadership from his experiences living in a L'Arche community.

I feel like this year I've finally got into a rhythm of reading more, so I'm always looking for new recommendations too. I've realised that I tend to prefer more history focused ones, to more self help type of ones.

Thanks! I'm finding the Ramsey quite book good, actually - once I reminded myself that it's 1972 and pre women's ordination! It's thought provoking in various ways.
I've seen the Cotterell book and will give it a read at some point. Not seen Graham Tomlin's one though. I've also got Christopher Cocksworth's Being a Priest Today on the list!

I’m rereading “Sensible Shoes” by Sharon Garlough Brown. It’s a fiction book following 4 women who meet at a spiritual retreat centre, but shows how their faith develops through the retreat centre and their friendship. It is a wonderful book and challenged me about developing my faith.

I loved this. He came and spoke at our church - was very good.

I've just finished Live No Lies by John Mark Comer. It was good clear stuff about basically being in the world but not of it.

Troubledwords · 04/11/2025 13:11

Does anyone have any Advent recommendations? Going to try and finish my current book by then, and would love something based around Advent and Christmas.

I've been getting into Lucy Peppiatt.
Im reading her book Rediscovering Scripture's Vision for Women.

She is fantastic and I have found that she deals with a lot of the hard/confusing passages about submission etc in an insightful way but which feels to me like it unravels the patriarchy assumptions.

I would recommend to anyone who struggles with some of the traditionsl Christsn teachings on women/gender roles etc.

The Towers of Trebizond by Rose Macauley.

LeaningOnTheEverlastingArms · 10/11/2025 11:00

Just starting this after reading his excellent “Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes” some years ago.
