I’ve been a chaplain in a hospital and a hospice. One of the first rules is don’t proselytise. You are there to be a listening ear and to help reframe the story of someone’s life. If a patient asks about faith you can speak, but only when asked.

Are you a Christian @CanIgetARosePinkFrappucino ?

I am training to be a hospital Chaplain volunteer and activity coordinator and am due to start work in September. I am a Christian, but I have been trained to give support to everyone of any faith or none. In time I may be called to pray for people and then give Communion. If I cannot attend to someone, I can refer to the hospital chaplain myself. I have been baptised, confirmed and received in the vows and said for spiritual union to the church.

It is good to get involved in this if you can. It was my dream job before COVID started and has just started to open up again with some hospitals.

Someone mentioned about people passing away and getting no support. I haven't seen a thread like this on this section. You cannot approach someone if they are not a Christian and help them in a Christian but general nature on the wider forum.

I wrote the post below on this subject and if it helps feel free to support others with any of it.

....
I know some people are in pain from losing loved ones in this world. Although, I know there is a life beyond-still we can mourn those who we have loved in our life's and who have been anchors and pillars to our life's.

My hope is that they had all been called by God in his own perfect timing.

I want to keep this short and say that if you have lost a loved one then you can in some church's attend a separate group called Beaverement Cafe. This is run by trained people who do this who have DBS checks. Jesus said Blessed are those who mourn and those who are poor in spirit. We need to be there for them, but also encourage them think of the future to.

There is also spiritual counselling which is low cost or free where you can talk about your distress. God sees the plight of the afflicted. You can search to for a spiritual companion. The Holy Spirit can work with you to deal with trauma to help you try and move on. Trauma can lead to problems in the holistic body. The link below is just one place to look for such support. Look online for help for spiritual counselling.

Check on those who you care about who are dealing with grief if you can in the spirit of Jesus' law, when I needed a neighbour and being there for others to lend a hand. As Christians we should build each other up and encourage each other as said so clearly in (1 Thessalonians 5:11). "Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do" .(Galatians 6:2) speaks to us also about the need to support fellow Christians.

I will also say that that the prayers of a loved one said in true faith can save those in the household to the next life as the Bible tells us-(Acts 16: 32-24) "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Shortly after their mortal death still try and save a loved one if they didn't have a strong faith-You have nothing to lose by trying if you are a believer.

It does not need a person with the label ‘chaplain’ to act according to your opening post. If you are reading such messages, then, as a Christian, and as you know Christ Jesus, you are equipped to respond.

Personally, I do not read every topic, and on the topics I read, I do not have time to read every post … I have not noticed any posts of the type you mention, and I do not feel a prompt from the Holy Spirit to go looking for them. 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately or fortunately many people come in this site and it's nice knowing some are chaplains and christians

Hi everyone, on Friday I start my induction as a hospital chaplain volunteer. I have done the checks etc and been there a few times. I will be an activity coordinator and a hospital chaplain volunteer. I cannot wait to give this a go.
I feel like my sabbatical online may be a little bit done for now and turning another chapter in a book. I will be working in a hospital for those who need medical rehabilitation.

I wonder if there are any tips from anyone has done this role.

I am so glad to see it back up and it was down for so long after COVID. I know some places that would accept people in London NHS hospitals.

I'd avoid mentioning Michael Jackson as any advocate of Christianity, and avoid talk of drinking potions made from sacrificed birds and similar. 😕

Thanks, well I don't know a thing about Michael Jackson's faith and wouldn't talk about it. I mentioned that song in the other post as for the video stills they were dramatic and that is a social media discussion and not private at work. That wouldn't come up. I was talking to my past and my personal experience in the other post which of course has nothing to do with my work.

The key is to listen. Then listen some more. Often what you are doing is help people reframe their story from Pst who was CEO of a large company or Eric who was a skilled machinist to Eric and Pat who are now in need of care three times a week or whatever the usual outcome is for your unit. A lot of the work is about navigating identity. Faith is there for you to make sense of it as you listen to many stories. You can speak about that faith if asked but it is in the service of someone making sense of their story and not evangelising. Enjoy. It’s a fabulous job.
