The (lack of) response to recent legislation by the c of e

Have I missed any response from the C of E to the 2 bills passed this week on late abortion and assisted dying?
I don't mean isolated bishops, I mean the organisation? The Catholics have been quick off the mark but I have seen anything from the Anglican church.
Which seems pretty bad to me.

Thanks.
Was there anything similar re late abortion?

I'm on X, and there's plenty of tweets from the Catholic church, condemning this.
I still feel that the Anglican church should have more to say.

Indeed.

well, at church today, we received a sermon on the necessity of reparations for Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. I'm done. Perhaps I'll become Russian Orthodox.

The C of E never fails to disappoint in such matters and lags way behind with good strong Biblical leadership.

@Sausagenbacon ... we received a sermon on the necessity of reparations for Trans Atlantic Slave Trade ...

Really? I mean, really? What Biblical chapter and verse did they use for that particular political speech?

Sausagenbacon · 22/06/2025 22:04

Yes. You'd have thought they could have linked to Elijah sitting under a broom tree and saying he wanted to die.
But no, linked to the possessed man in chains in the story of the Gadarene swine. From chains to the slave trade.

OP I'm in a similar position to you and after much discernment I'm hoping to start the RCIA process to convert to Roman Catholicism starting this autumn. I do care about slavery both historic and modern day but right now I could have really done with some more leadership and intellectual engagement from CofE on late abortion and assisted dying. I often feel our Anglican clergy get on their soap box preaching to the converted about things like transatlantic slavery and denouncing Donald Trump (I mean come on, who in an Anglican "broad church" in a metropolitan area of England s going to be pro-Trump?? It's hardly like you are Mariann Budde)
A lot of our sermons are indistinguishable from corporate DEI trainings I encounter in the large multinational company I work for. Don't get me wrong, DEI is really important and I believe we must all do our bit to fight racism, able-ism, sexism and homophobia. But I come to church to experience something transcendent and eternal. Y'know, the life after death stuff, a little bit of mysticism, the forgiveness of my sins, the affirmation of my Christian faith....
The lukewarm response on euthanasia and late abortion confirms my sense that I'm personally not in the right denomination.
This is an interesting discussion I must say, and one that I am loathe to have in real life. Good old Mumsnet eh

The Catholic church have commented but not the CoE. I long ago gave up on them, they are barely a church any more in my opinion as they go against scripture on many matters.

I am so glad I left the C of E and swam the Tiber! The huge amount of money that the c of e put into slave trade reparations is just ridiculous and completely fails to address people who are in need today. Particularly those victims of modern day slavery. I’ve not heard one word from the c of e about life issues. And their record on safeguarding is dreadful, at least the RC church has really taken control on that. Stephen cotteril really should have resigned over the Liverpool scandal.

The Gardarene swine story has nothing to do with physical slavery in its context. It's about possession by demons. Quite a leap.

Both responses are a bit wishy-washy, sadly.
I am not in favour of elective abortion for no medical or social reason but would not impose this belief on others. But decriminalising abortion up to birth (the much vaunted right to abort up to the moment of delivery, a US obsession) is unethical, immoral and dangerous to women, both those who may be vulnerable to coercion and those who are desperate. The 'pills by post' extension is the begetter of this amendment, I suppose, and the correct solution was to make sure that every woman who requests an abortion is seen face to face so that she and her pregnancy and its duration can be properly assessed. Saying it is ok to take pill at 38 weeks to abort a pregnancy is insane. How many women will die of this? How many be totally traumatised?
