Sunday School Songs (in days gone by!)

When I was in infant Sunday School we always sang four songs.

The first was at the beginning:
"We are here in Sunday School
Happy children every one
So we sing our welcome song
Just because he loved us so
Come children welcome,
Come children, welcome
We are here to welcome you
Boys, and girls and babies too"

Then we did birthdays

Then we did our collection. Did anyone else sing this?
"Hear the pennies dropping
Listen how they fall
Every one for Jesus
We shall have them all

Dropping, dropping, dropping, dropping
Hear the pennies fall
Every one for Jesus he shall have them all"

And you repeated the last three lines until the plate had been round everyone. We always loved that song, and would pass the bag as slowly as possible to see how many times we could sing the last bit!

Then at the end we sang:
"Hands together softly so
Little eyes shut tight
Father, just before we go
Hear our prayers tonight
We are all thy children here
This is what we pray
Keep us when the dark is near
And through every day
Amen"
I also sang that at the end of the day in our (unconnected, not even in the same village) primary school.

We then went straight in to:
"Our Sunday School is over
And we are going to church
Goodbye, goodbye,
Be always kind and true (line sung by teachers)
Goodbye, goodbye
We will be kind and true (line sung by children)"

We used to sing "we are going home" until one child pointed out that we weren't going home, we were going to church, so it was changed. We waved at each other while singing "goodbye" and the leader would call out "Goodbye children" at the end, and in the winter "have you got your coats" because it was quite a walk from the parish rooms to the church and we were only let in at the correct time, so if we arrived early we could be waiting a long time.

What songs do you remember singing?

I don't remember any from Sunday school, but there was one at school that began,
"Daisies are my silver, buttercups my gold,
This is all the treasure we can have or hold".

I've never come across it since.

They are lovely memories. I wish I could join you in reminiscing, but Sunday School passed me by.

I remember choruses-
I will make you fishers of men

Trust and obey

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

I didn't go to Sunday school but my dc did -
"Jesus loves me this i know, for the Bible tells me so..."
"Father Abraham, Father Abraham had many sons, many sons had Father Abraham....."
"I have seen seen the downfall of satan, glory be to God, glory be to Jesus..."

We used to sing "The Wise Man built his house upon the rocks" where the rains came down and the floods came up and the foolish man built his on the sand etc.

Also the "Magic Penny" song, Love is nothing til you give it away etc., I guess maybe not totally a Sunday school song but the right theme

"Jesus Loves Me"
"Michael Row the Boat Ashore"

One about the Animals Went in Two by Two but I don't remember exact words

I'm sure there were others but I don't remember them; I didn't go for long!

Lovely thread -
I particularly liked " God has given us a book full of stories" and a few years later when we got into the seventies, a song which went -
"I've got a home in gloryland that outshines the sun" etc, with a chorus of "Do lord, oh do Lord oh do remember me....way beyond the blue"

This was a methodist church where singing was everything.

Our village church had a children's choir so the songs are in my DNA. My favourites were:

Colours of day
If I were a butterfly
I have seen the golden sunshine

We sang that at school.

Daisies are our silver,
Buttercups our gold:
This is all the treasure
We can have or hold.

Raindrops are our diamonds
And the morning dew;
While for shining sapphires
We've the speedwell blue.

These shall be our emeralds
Leaves so new and green;
Roses make the reddest
Rubies ever seen.

God, who gave these treasures
To your children small,
Teach us how to love them
And grow like them all.

Make us bright as silver:
Make us good as gold;
Warm as summer roses
Let our hearts unfold.

Gay as leaves in April,
Clear as drops of dew
God, who made the speedwell,
Keep us true to you.

The 'Michael Rows the boat a shore" has brought back memories of school. I used to think it was "Michael rose the bobbinshaw", followed by lots of crooning, 'HALLELUUUUJAH!" oh my days!
